Abstract

Powered lifts and Stairlifts and vehicles which do not have trailing cables may need to be remotely controlled by a Telecommand signal. This signal is conveyed to the moving vehicle by the use of Induction loop or radio technology and the rail on which the car runs is part of the loop or antenna. The command signals are picked up by a suitable receiver on the moving car and used to control its movement. The use of the rail as a transmission line enables the receiver pick-up coil to be fixed at a consistent distance from the rail and provide the receiver with a reliable signal whether the rail is straight or curved. A separate wire inside or alongside the rail may be used instead. <IMAGE>

Description

Telecommand of moving vehicles on rails.
The new generation of battery powered lifts rely on the use of a self contained moving vehicle which may be used for vertical transportation by climbing up a prefabricated rack. or more commonly used to enable people of limited mobility to negotiate staircases. This type of lift is generally referred to as a Stairlift. The invention however applies to any kind of transport in which the remote control is to be carried out by wireless telecommand.
For the purposes of the description, however the Stairlift example is used.
If it is necessary to provide remote CALL and/or SEND and/or EMERGENCY STOP control of the vehicle, and if the car does not have direct wire connections to suitable remote switches then this facility must be provided by a 'Wireless' signal Telecommand.
According to the present invention the signal path is completed by using the structure of the rail itself as part of the sending signal path enabling the receiver antenna to be fixed to the car close to the rail in order to pick up the telecommand signal at a constant level.
It is the use of the rail or rack, or a seperate wire inside or alongside the rail whether straight or curved, to convey the signal which is the special feature.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: - Fig 1 Shows the Rail with the Telecommand unit connected.
Description.
The transmitter - A - is used to Call and Send the car - E - from both ends. Box G is a slave control box containing remote switches and no transmitter. The Signal is in the licensed Telecommand Band according to MPT regulations and the signal path is via the connections to the metal rail - D - via connection points - B - and returns in the multicore cable - F On the car - E - the receiver aerial coil - C - is positioned to pick up sufficient signal to ensure reliable operation.
The command signals are arranged in a manner to enable the car to be controlled in accordance with the appropriate specifications governing such vehicles whether Stairlift or Vertical lift or Horizontal travel.

Claims (2)

1) The telecommand signal whether adopting induction loop or radio technology uses the metal rail on which the vehicle travels to convey the signals to the telecommand receiver which is fitted to the moving vehicle.
2) The contents of 1) plus the use of extra wires fitted inside or alongside the rail as an alternative to the rail itself.
