Abstract
226,782. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Smythe, E. H.). Dec. 24, 1923, [Convention date]. Automatic exchange systems.-The terminals of a connector are divided into groups of unequal size, serving, for example, different Private Branch Exchanges and the wipers are stepped to the wanted group under control of a counting chain built up by the final digit. With this arrangement, all subscribers can be numbered consecutively, and no alteration in numbering is necessary when the size of a P.B.X. group is altered. When the subscriber A reaches the connector shown, relays 3, 4, pull up, and relay 5 repeats the final digit to the counting relays 7, 9, 17 - - 20, &c., which lock up in succession, two for each impulse, and ground terminals in the path of wiper 8 of the connector. Relay 10 pulls up over wiper 8 and energizes the self-interrupting stepping-magnet 12. When wiper 8 leaves the terminal, relay 10 falls back, but re-energizes to cause a further step when the next terminal is encountered. When an ungrounded terminal is reached, relay 10 fails to re-energize, and relay 11 which was energized in parallel with the stepping magnet falls back sluggishly and energizes relays 6, 22. Relay 6 locks up, disconnects the left hand winding of relay 22, and releases the counting relays. Relay 22 connects relay 10 to the test wiper 15 over its own right-hand winding so that the switch hunts for an idle line, the test terminal of which being ungrounded, relay 10 fails to re-energize and the sluggish relapse of relay 22 energizes relay 32 in series with the cut-off relay (e.g. 31). Relay 32 energizes ringing relay 35. The reply of the called party causes relay 33 to remove a short-circuit from switching-relay 34 which locks up and shortcircuits ringing relay 35. Release. Relay 29 which is energized on the relapse of relays 3, 4, energizes the stepping magnet over off-normal springs 16. the change over of which completes the release. Busy tone. If all the lines are busy, wiper 15 moves on to a terminal such as 38 to energize relay 39 which connects up busy transformer 40. Relay 32 is unable to energize in series with relay 39.
