Abstract
A pen combined with a paper dispenser comprises a lower portion 12, having a refillable ink cartridge 16, screw threaded at 28, 29 with an upper portion 14 having a paper roll secured to a spindle 21. The end 19 of the roll is dispensed through a slit 22 provided with a serrated edge. The spindle 21 is screw-threaded at 27 into a knob 26, rotation of which enables the paper to be dispensed. Unscrewing of cap 32 enables the roll to be renewed or replaced. The lower end of the spindle 21 is received in member (34, Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO A PEN
Writing implements in the form of ink pens are used to write letters, make notes and the like.
It is essential, however, when using a pen, to have a piece of paper or the like on which the pen can write the letter or note.
It is sometimes a problem in certain circumstances to obtain a piece of paper on which to write a passing thought or urgent note, and it is an object of this invention to overcome this problem.
In accordance with this invention, a pen comprises a writing portion and a paper holding portion forming part of the pen.
Such a product is useful in that a piece of paper is readily at hand when needed to write a passing thought or write an urgent message.
Preferably, the writing portion is refillable with an ink cartridge, and the paper holding portion is similarly refillable with a new paper roll. Preferably the paper holding portion comprises a central spindle about which the paper is secured and stored, and an outlet is provided in the paper holding portion so that paper can be removed for use.
Suitably, the outlet has a serrated or cutting edge such that a required length of paper can be torn and removed.
Suitably, the spindle to which the paper is attached is connected to a rotating member provided at tne top and outside of the pen such that a person can rotate the rotating member, and thereby remove a certain amount of paper from the pen.
Suitably, the paper holding portion is screwthreaded to the writing portion such that it can be disconnected therefrom.
Suitably, the spindle is screwthreaded to the outer end of the pen such that the spindle can be disconnected by rotating the end of the spindle either for replacement by another spindle with a roll of paper or alternatively so that a new roll of paper can be attached thereto.
Suitably, the paper holding portion is provided with a locating member in order to locate the spindle correctly within the pen such that the paper can be removed properly from the outlet.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a side view of a pen in accordance
with the invention;
Figure 2 shows a side view of the paper holding
portion of the pen shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 shows the spindle of the pen shown in
Figure 1.
In the drawings, a pen 10 is shown comprising a writing portion 12 and a paper holding portion 14 forming part of the pen.
The pen writing portion 12 is refillable with an ink cartridge 16, and the paper holding portion 14 is similarly refillable with a (not shown) paper roll.
The paper holding portion 14 is screwthreaded internally (see 28) at its bottom to co-operate with a counter screwthread 29 provided externally at the top of the writing portion 12, such that the two portions can be disconnected from each other.
The paper holding portion comprises a central spindle 20 to which the paper roll is secured via a slit 21, and about which the paper roll is stored, and an outlet 22 is provided in the paper holding portion which is slightly longer than the width of the paper so that paper (see 19) can be removed for use.
The outlet 22 has a serrated or cutting edge 24 such that a required length of paper can be torn and removed, and a slot 25 of narrower width than the outlet 22 is provided between the outlet 22 and upper end of the paper holding portion 14 so that paper can be guided on insertion of the paper roll.
The spindle 20 to which the paper is attached is connected to a locating member 23 which is in turn connected to a rotating member 26 in the form of a knob, which knob is provided at the top and outside of the pen such that a person can rotate the knob 26, and thereby remove a certain amount of paper from the pen. The locating member 23 is sized to fit snugly inside the top of the paper holding portion 14 and thereby position the spindle 20 correctly within the paper holding portion 14.
The inner end 27 of the spindle 20 is screwthreaded externally to co-operate with a counter screwthread provided internally at the knob 26, the locating member 23 being provided with a threaded central hole through which the inner end of the spindle 20 passes to connect with the knob 26. To remove the spindle 20 from the knob 26, one turns the knob in the opposite direction to that necessary to turn the knob 26 to remove paper from the pen. Stop means (not shown) are also provided to prevent the knob 26 when being rotated to remove paper, from rotating in the opposite direction so that paper does not return back inside the paper holding portion 14. The stop means, however, do not prevent the knob 26 from being disconnected from the spindle 20, since the stop means can be overcome by the application of a little force.
A cap 32 is provided to support tightly yet movably thereon the knob 26 and spindle 20. The cap 32 is screwthreaded internally (see 30) to a counter screwthread 33 provided externally at the outer end of the paper holding portion 14 such that the spindle 20, locating member 23, knob 26 and cap 32 can be disconnected from the paper holding portion 14 by rotating the cap 32 (in the reverse direction to that necessary to turn the knob 26 to remove paper) either for replacement by another spindle with a roll of paper or alternatively so that a new roll or paper can be attached thereto.
The bottom of the paper holding portion 14 is provided with a locating member 34 in the torm ot a ledge with a hole in order to locate the spindle 20 correctly within the pen such that paper can be removed properly. In particular, the locating members 23 and 34 co-operate together to locate the spindle 20 correctly within the paper holding portion 14.
Such a product is useful in that a piece of paper is readily at hand when needed to write a passing thought or write an urgent message.
