Abstract
A windpost (1) has a central web (2) and two side flanges (3). The central web (2) has a plurality of apertures (4) spaced therealong for engagement with ends of respective pairs of tie plates (7) extending in opposite directions therefrom. Thus, the windpost (1) suffers minimal torque in use and the side flanges (3) are not weakened by apertures to which tie plates are usually attached. Preferably, the tie plates (7) have hook-shaped (12) ends (9) for engagement with the apertures (4). <IMAGE>
Description
A windpost, a windpost assembly
and a method of tying two spaced members therewith
The present invention relates to a windpost, a windpost assembly and a method of tying two spaced members therewith.
It is known to use a windpost assembly comprising an upright windpost and tie members, e.g. tie plates to tie two spaced walls. The windpost has a central web and two side flanges. The side flanges have apertures therealong for engagement by the ends of tie plates which are then embedded in the spaced walls. A disadvantage of this arrangement is that the side flanges are weakened by the apertures therealong.
Furthermore, the windpost is subject to undesirable torque when increased or reduced pressure, as a result of wind, causes movement of the outer wall towards or away from the inner wall.
An object of the present invention is to provide a windpost and a windpost assembly in which the above disadvantages are eliminated or at least reduced.
The invention provides a windpost as claimed in claim 1.
The invention also provides a windpost assembly as claimed in claim 5.
The invention still further provides a method of tying two spaced members as claimed in claim 10.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a windpost assembly mounted between two spaced walls,
Figure 2 is a plan view of one of the tie plates of
Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a plan view on an enlarged scale of part of a modified tie plate.
In Figure 1 a windpost 1 has a substantially Z-shaped cross-section and comprises a central web 2 and two side flanges 3. A plurality of apertures in the form of longitudinally-.extending slots 4 are arranged longitudinally along the web 2.
In use, the windpost 1 is used to tie spaced outer and inner walls 5 and 6. Tie members, e.g. in the form of plates 7 are used to tie the walls 5 and 6 to the windpost 1.
In Figure 2 a tie plate 7 is shown as a substantially rectangular plate having a plane end 8 and a hook-shaped end 9. The hook-shaped end is formed by a rectangular cutout 10 in one side of the tie plate 7 with an under-cut 11 at an inner corner of the cutout 10 to form a hook 12.
The tie plate 7 is connected to the windpost 1 by inserting the end 9 with the hook 12 through the aperture 4. In order to do this, the tie plate 7 must be held in the vertical plane, or within an angle of about 30 of the vertical plane depending on the width of the aperture 4 and the thickness of the tie plate 7.
When the end 9 has been inserted through the aperture 4 the tie plate 7 is pivoted to a horizontal position as shown in Figure 1 with the hook 12 on one side of the aperture 4 and the rest of the tie plate 7 on the other side of the aperture 4. Thus, the tie plate 7 is locked to the windpost.
In order to prevent movement of the tie plate 7 relative to the windpost 1, the undercut 11 may be formed of substantially the same width as the thickness of the web 2 of the windpost 1 so as to provide a forced fit therebetween. Alternatively, as shown in Figure 3, the undercut 11 is wider than the thickness of the web 2 of the windpost 1 so as to facilitate assembly, but has a throat 13 to provide positive clamping against the web 1. The throat 13 may be formed by any suitable projection or projections extending partially across the undercut 11 and may be tooth-shaped as shown in Figure 3.
It will be seen from Figure 1 that pairs of tie plates 7 are inserted into each aperture 4 and pivoted in opposite directions to be embedded in the outer and inner walls 5 and 6, respectively.
For the purposes of this description the ends 8 of the tie plates 7 remote from the windpost 1 have been shown plane. In practice, the ends 8 would be suitably shaped for maximum bonding with the walls 5 and 6. For example, the ends 8 could be twisted through 90 to be embedded in the vertical course between blocks. The ends 8 could have a slot to incorporate an anchor, e. g.
in the form of a bent reinforcing bar to be laid in the horizontal course between the blocks making up the walls 5 and 6 (e.g. as shown in our co-pending application
No. 9203753. 0 filed on 21 February, 1992).
An advantage of the above embodiment is that, since the tie plates 7 are connected to the central web 2 of the tie plate 1, there is no need for the side flanges 3 to have apertures, so that they are not weakened thereby.
Furthermore, the attachment of the tie plates 7 to the central web 1, rather than to the side flanges 3, ensures that there is minimal torque on the windpost 1 during severe wind conditions tending to move the outer wall 5 towards or away from the inner wall 6.
