Abstract
A container, eg an ISO container, for carrying on a trail or has two or more compartments (3, 4), one compartment (3) being a service compartment containing means for providing electricity eg a diesel generator (5), and a second compartment (4) forming a room for accommodating at least temporarily one or more persons, and containing one or more appliances (13, 15, 16, 19) which consume the electricity. In a preferred embodiment, the second compartment is fitted out with laundry equipment; alternatively the second compartment may provide a kitchen, bathroom or living accommodation. <IMAGE>
Description
A SERVICE UNIT
The present invention relates to transportable service units, for example a mobile laundry.
The present invention aims to provide a service unit such as a mobile laundry for use in areas where local services, such as electricity, water and gas, are nonexistent or only poorly available, for example in regions devastated by war or natural disasters, #nderdeveloped areas or desert areas.
According to the invention there is provided a transportable service unit comprising a container for carrying on a trailer, the container having two or more compartments, one compartment being a service compartment containing means for providing electricity, and a second compartment forming a room for accommodating at least temporarily one or more persons, and containing one or more appliances which consume the said electricity.
The invention also contemplates a mobile service unit comprising a trailer, and mounted thereon a container of the aforesaid type.
The service compartments of the container, in addition to means for providing electricity, may also comprise any one or more items selected from a boiler, water storage tank, air compressor, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) storage vessels, fuel oil or petrol tanks, and electrical storage batteries.
The means for providing electricity preferably takes the form of a diesel generator.
The second compartment, according to one embodiment of the invention, is fitted out with laundry equipment, for example selected from washing machines, tumble driers, dry cleaning machines and optionally ancillary equipment such as sewing machines, trouser presses etc.
The second container conveniently is fitted with means for heating or cooling the interior of the container, and preferably is equipped with air conditioning.
The second container may also be fitted with control apparatus, for example a centralised control panel comprising means for monitoring and controlling the various services and appliances contained within the container.
The container may conveniently be an ISO container, for example a 40 foot (12.192 metres) container.
The trailer can be of conventional type, but conveniently may be modified to carry the container. For example, the trailer may be equipped with tail boards which are hingedly attached thereto, and when lowered serve as access stairs. Furthermore, the trailer may be provided with one or more variable height support legs to enable the trailer to be levelled. Such support legs preferably are hydraulically operated.
One embodiment of the invention will now be illustrated in greater detail by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a container according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of the container shown in
Figure I, but with the trailer also illustrated;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the container of Figure 1, showing the contents;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the container on its trailer, omitting the contents of the container but illustrating the access doors and trailer tail boards in the open position;
Figure 5 is an end view of the container shown in
Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is an end view of the container shown in
Figure 2 with the access doors open and the trailer tail boards down.
Referring now to the accompanying Figures, it will be seen that the container 1 is a standard 40 foot (12.192 metres) ISO container which has been modified to accommodate the services and appliances in accordance with the invention. As can be seen from Figures 3 and a, the interior of the container is divided by a partition wall 2 into two compartments 3 and 4. The smaller of the two compartments, compartment 3 contains the services necessary for operation of the mobile laundry. Thus, the compartment contains a diesel engine driven electrical generator 5, two liquid petroleum gas storage vessels 6, a liquid petroleum gas fired boiler 7, a tank containing diesel fuel for the generator, a water storage tank 8, and an electrically driven air compressor 9, electrically driven hot and cold water circulation pump 10, and air cooling units 11.As can be seen from Figures 1 and 2, the services compartment 3 is provided with side walls formed as louvred panels 12 which are removable to allow access for maintenance. Disposed against the inner surface of the louvred panels are roller blind type canvas sheets (not shown) for the purpose of preventing ingress of sand during transportation. The interior of the services compartment 3 is protected by a pressurised carbon dioxide fire extinguishing system.
The other compartment 2 is fitted out as a field laundry, and accordingly is equipped with an automatic washer extractor 13, an automatic tumble drier 14 (which operates on propane gas), a closed circuit perchloroethylene dry cleaning unit 15, a pressing station 16 comprising a vacuum table, steam iron and trouser topper, and work station 17 comprising a sewing machine, label writer and label press, a work bench and chair. The laundry compartment has fitted in the walls thereof inlet filter assemblies fitted with washable filters to remove dust from the air entering the compartment. Ventilation fans 19 extract air from the interior of the container.
Storage cupboards 20 provide space for materials and finished laundry.
The interior of the laundry working compartment is protected by fire/smoke/fume detectors which are linked to an audible alarm. The said detectors are connected to a centralised control panel 21 which also is linked to various service indicators such as a diesel engine overheat warning, diesel engine cooling water level indicator, diesel engine sump oil level indicator, water tank level indicator, liquid petroleum gas level indicator, air conditioning on light, temperature indicators for work and services compartments, services compartment fire warning audible alarm, work compartment fire/smoke/fume audible alarm, a doors open warning, and other control elements.
The sides of the laundry working compartment are fitted with doors 22 and 23, on each side. A set of stairs 24 is provided, and these may be removed and stowed under the trailer for transportation. The container is also provided with access doors 25 at the end thereof.
A telescopic door support leg 30 is provided on access door 25.
The trailer 26 is a conventional three axle trailer suitable for carrying an ISO container. In this case, the trailer tail boards 27 have been modified to form hinged access stairs which can be lowered when the trailer is on site. The trailer is also provided with hydraulically operated trailer support legs 28 which may be used to level the trailer for operation of the laundry on uneven terrain. The side wall of the container is provided with an access hatch 29 which permits connection of the services within the service compartment to external service points, e.g. supplies of water, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and diesel fuel.
It will readily be apparent that a service unit of the aforementioned type could be used not only to provide a field laundry, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but could also be used as, for example, a transportable or mobile bathroom, kitchen, or living accommodation. The foregoing specific description is by way of illustration only, and it will readily be apparent that numerous modifications and alterations could be made to the service unit shown without departing from the principles underlying this invention. All such modifications and alterations are intended to be embraced by this application.
