Abstract

226,376. Villiers Engineering Co., Ltd., and Pountney, F. Jan. 5, 1924. Clutches, freewheel for cycles.- An unhardened centre A, adapted to screw on the hub, is provided at one side with a dirt-excluding flange B and recesses for pivoted pawls E, and at the other side with a pair of hardened ball race rings G, H. The ring G bears on a shoulder A<2> and serves to close the pawl recesses, while the ring H screws on the centre A and abuts on the ring G. The creeping action of the balls keeps the ring H tight, but locking-means may also be provided. The sprocket ring L, having ratchet teeth M and a single race N for the balls K, is also hardened. The centre A may be grooved to receive spring fingers F for actuating the pawls, which may be of sheet metal with rounded ends forming pivots.
