Abstract

A window comprises a frame and a window sash (5) slidable vertically within the frame, the sash (5) being provided at the sides of its lower edge with downwardly depending horns (7) which are hingedly connected to the sash (5) such that when the sash (5) is tilted inwardly of the window frame the horns (7) remain vertical. The invention enables the decorative benefits of horns to be realised in tilting windows. <IMAGE>

Description

Title : Window This invention relates to a window, in particular to a vertically sliding window having decorative features.
Wooden window frames, particularly in older properties, are prone to rotting and require replacement. In addition, older window frames are generally single-glazed and it is often desirable for these to be replaced by double-glazed units, for improved heat insulation etc.
One form of window, which is particularly common on older properties, has vertically sliding sashes. Modern forms of such window are generally constructed in such a way that the sashes can not only be slid vertically, but can also be tilted inwardly, for increased ventilation or to facilitate cleaning.
The sashes of vertically sliding windows in older properties are, however, often provided with 'horns' at the base of the upper sash, adjacent the window frame. The horns are often decoratively shaped or carved, and it is desirable that replacement windows should have the same form, eg where only some of the windows in a particular property are replaced or to retain the original character of a property where all the windows are replaced. Indeed, conservation regulations may require that replacement windows have the same appearance as the original windows.
Where horns are provided on a vertically sliding window sash, however, a problem which has hitherto been encountered is that the horns interfere with the tilting action of the window, with the result that this feature cannot be used and the advantages of increased ventilation and easier cleaning are lost.
There has now been devised a form of vertically sliding window which overcomes or substantially mitigates the above-mentioned disadvantage.
According to the invention, there is provided a window comprising a frame and a window sash slidable vertically within the frame, wherein the sash is provided at the sides of its lower edge with downwardly depending horns which are hingedly connected to the sash such that when the sash is tilted inwardly of the window frame the horns remain vertical.
The window according to the invention is advantageous primarily in that it enables the use of horns on tiltable windows, providing the benefits of such windows in properties which for one reason or another require windows with horns.
Although the window is of particular utility in the replacement of windows in older properties, it may also be used in new properties, where the decorative effect of horns is desired.
The window frame and sash may be made of any material which is conventionally used for the constructions of such components, eg timber. Most conveniently, however, the frame and sash are made of plastics material, eg extruded PVC.
The horns may be made in any desired shape and from any desired material. The horns may, for example, be moulded in plastics, eg PVC, but may be provided with a veneer, eg of extruded PVC, to ensure a good visual match with the sash material.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of illustration only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a window according to the invention having upper and lower vertically sliding sashes, Figure 2A is a perspective view of the region of the window of Figure 1 which is encircled and marked II in Figure 1, Figure 2B is a perspective view of the same region as shown in Figure 2A with the lower sash tilted inwardly, Figure 2C is a further perspective view of the same region with both upper and lower sashes tilted inwardly, Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the window of Figure 1, Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the window of Figure 1 with the upper and lower sashes overlapping, and Figure 5 is a partial front elevation of the base of the upper sash of the window of Figure 1 showing a horn.
Referring first to Figure 1, a window comprises a frame formed from right and left jambs 1,2, a head 3 and a sill 4, all of which are PVC extrusions. Slidably mounted within the frame are upper and lower sashes 5,6, the lower sash 6 being mounted inwardly of the upper sash 5.
As can be seen most clearly from Figure 2A, the upper sash 5 is provided at its base with two downwardly depending decorative horns 7. The horns 7 are connected by means of hinges (not visible) to the upper sash 5 at the inward lower edge thereof.
Both the upper sash 5 and the lower sash 6 are tiltable inwardly to provide increased ventilation or to facilitate cleaning. Figure 2B shows the lower sash 6 in the tilted position. When the lower sash 6 is tilted, the upper sash 5 may also be tilted, as shown in Figure 2C, from which it can be seen that the horn 7 remains vertical.
Figures 3 and 4 show constructional details of the window.
The right and left jambs 1,2, the head 3 and the sill 4 each contain steel reinforcements 8. The upper sash 5 and lower sash 6 each comprise frames formed from PVC extrusions 9 and contain a sealed double-glazed unit 10 which is held in place by an extruded PVC glazing bead 11.
From Figures 4 and 5 it can be seen that the horn 7 has a laterally extending portion 7a which locates in a groove in the right or left jamb 1,2. From Figure 3, it can be seen that the horn has veneer 7b of extruded PVC to match the finish of the upper sash 5.
