Abstract

A tile having at least one indentation 9 extending along a horizontal axis of the tile, is positioned in use, such that a cooperating member 11 has a first end fitted within a substantial part of said indentation and a second end which is secured to a base 3. The arrangement is such that each tile is secured to a base along its axis of indentation. The tiles may be of heat-resistant alumina secured to a steel base. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO WEAR RESISTANT TILES The invention relates to wear resistant tiles and in particular to a means of securing such tiles there together on a pre-determined surface.
Wear resistant tiles such as aluriina tiles, and in particular high purity alumina tiles, are commonly used to resist wear from abrasion or erosion by mineral particles. The tiles norrlal ly need to be fastened to surfaces which achieve high temperatures when an installation is operating and it will therefore be apparent that the use fo adhesive for this purpose is futile. Indeed, even high temperature adhesives are ineffective under these conditions. Further, adhesives can also be rendered ineffective as a result of stresses produced by operation of an installation.
In the industry, attachment of ti les, in addition to adhesion, has been achieved by other means of mechanical fixing. Current methods of mechanical fixing use either a) Welded ferrules with a protectlve al-ii ra cap. This includes a tile having a depression, typically circular, on an attachment surface In the depression there is attached, via adhesion, an alumina dise.
Attached to this disc is a ferrule which is welded to a relevant surface for the purpose of securing the tile in position.
An alternative method of mechanical fixing includes: b) Threading tiles onto wire or metal rods which rods are then welded, at intervals, to a steel base. This method typically includes the provision of a nesting tile with a lower projection which projection has a circular aperture through which a metal rod can be threaded. Thus a number of tiles can be threaded together using the nietal rod and at pre-selected intervals the rectal rod can be welded to a relevant surface.
The first method, welded ferrules with a protective alumina cap, has tlie disadvantage that tlie surface of the tiles suffers from excessive wear around the protective alumina cap, and as a result of tlii 5 the cap, and ultimately the tile, niay become detached.
Method b) , tile threaded onto a n.etal rod, has the disadvantage that the mechanical fixing is limited because tlie anchoring metal rods are only fixed to the relevant base at intervals.
It Will be understood that the tiles are normally fastened to a pre-determined surface such as a steel base in order to protect tieni from wear.
It is an object of the invention to provide a syste'' whereby a plurality of wear resistant tiles can be securely, and substantially permanently, fixed to a pre-selected surface, which surface rlay be a steel base.
According to a first aspect of tlie invention there is therefore provided a system for attaching a plurality of tiles to a base conprising a plurality of tiles, each tile having at least one indentation extending along a horizontal axis of the tile when the tile is in use, and a cooperating member, which member has a first end sized and slial)cd to fit within a substantial part of the indentation and a second end which is adapted to be fixed to said base whereby each tile is secured to tlie baste along a substantial length of said axis.
Preferably the indentation is located within tie lower most surface of the tile when the tile is positioned in use.
Preferably the indentation is located within a side of the tile when tile tile is positioned in use.
Preferably the inclentation is located in either side of tlie tile when the tile is positioned in use.
Preferably the indentation is 'L' sectioned whereby when two tiles are positioned adjacent to each other tlie 'L' sectioned i Indentations unite to form a sectioned indentation.
Preferably the indentation extends along the longitudinal axis of the tile when the tile is positioned in use.
Preferably said cooperating member is either 'L' sectioned or 'T' sectioned so as to fit within at least one and preferably two adjacent 'L' sectioned indentations (which alien adjacent form a 'T' sectioned indentation).
Preferably said second end of said cooperating member is adapted to be yielded to said base.
Preferably fillet welds are used to weld said second end to said base.
According to a further aspect of the inventinon there is provided a tile for use in a system as afore described, wherein said tile has at least one iiidentation extending along a horizontal axis of tiie tile when tlie tile is positioned in use.
According to yet a further aspect of tile invention there is provided a cooperating member for use in a system as afore described wherein the cooperating member comprises a member having a first end which is sized and shaped to fit within a substantial part of an indentation provided in a tile for use within tlie invention, and said nieniber having a second end which is adapted to be fixed to a base.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a system in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 represents a perspective view of a system in accordance With the invention.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, there is illustrated an attachment system comprising a plurality of high purity alwnina tiles 1 which are positioned in adjacent relationship to overlie a steel base 3. Tiles 1 are machined along each longitudinal side edge 7 and 8 to provide a slot and rebate which constitutes an 'L' sectioned indentation 9. Indentations 9 are aligned so that when adjacent tiles I are positioned next to each other on base 3 indentations 9 cooperate to provide a generally 'T' sectioned indentation 10.
'T' sectioned cooperating members 4 are positioned within indentations 10 so as to interlock adjacent tiles 1 there together. Members 4 are secured to base 3 at their lower most edge 4a using fillet welds 2. Thus, the cooperating member 4 is attached to base 3 a 1 its entire longitudinal length.
In use, tiles 1 are slot ted onto 'T' sectioned cooperating members 4 and then members 4 are welded onto base 3.
A void 5 is provided between tlie lower rost surface la of tiles 1 and the upper lost surface 3a of base 3.
Void 5 is filled with a high temperature adhesive grout.
It can l)e seen by reference to Figure 2 that t i les 1 are interlocked there together using cooperating members 4 and then secured to base 3 by welding edge 4a of member 4 to base 3. The attach ncr-en t of t lie tiles In this manner prevents abrading material passing down between the tiles.
