Abstract

An erectable pallet pack (1) comprises a cardboard body portion having four sides (2, 3, 4, 5). Respective flaps extend from the walls. Two of the flaps fold inwardly to form the base of the pallet whilst the other flaps (12, 13) are pre-formed into tubes which receive polystyrene rods (16 and 17). The flaps (12 and 13), which are formed into tubes, are folded under the body of the pallet and act as feet so that the pallet may be lifted by a fork-lift truck and also serve to retain the other flaps in position. <IMAGE>

Description

SELF-LOCKING PALLET PACK DESCRIPTION The present invention relates to pallet packs.
In many industries, such as the automotive components industry, there is a need for light weight pallets, suitable for movement by fork-lift trucks.
Conventionally, such a pallets pack comprises a cardboard box structure stapled to a wooden platform.
An alternative structure comprises a similar cardboard box but attached to a platform formed from corrugated cardboard and polystyrene. The alternative platform consists of a corrugated cardboard panel to which are attached three square-section cardboard tubes, each carrying a polystyrene bar. The square-section tubes are positioned so that the tines of a fork-lift truck may be slid between them.
These prior art pallet packs suffer from the disadvantage that they are bulky and require a large amount of storage space. It is an aim of the present invention to overcome this disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided an erectable pallet pack having a foot member arranged for pivotal movement into a pallet pack supporting position, wherein, when in said supporting position, the foot member locks the pallet pack in an erect form for use.
Preferably, there are two foot members which, when in said supporting position, allow the pallet pack to be lifted by a fork-lift truck.
Preferably, the pallet pack has four sides, wherein one pair of opposed sides have extensions which encompass respective rods to form foot members and the other pair of opposed sides have extensions which are inwardly hingeable to form a pallet pack floor.
Advantageously, the first extension is preformed into a tube for accepting the rod, In a preferred embodiment, the body member is formed from cardboard and the rods are formed from expanded polystyrene.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure shows a pallet pack according to the present invention in its erected form; Figure 2 is a side view of the pallet pack shown in Figurel in a partially erect state; Figure 3 is a section on line A-B in Figure 2; Figure 4 shows the pallet pack before erection.
Figure 5 illustrates the locking action of the base member; and Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, a pallet pack 1 comprises four sides 2, 3, 4, 5. Flaps 6, 7, 8, 9 extend from the upper margins of the sides 2, 3, 4, 5 and are inwardly hingeable into a plane perpendicular to the planes of the sides 2, 3, 4, 5 to form a closure. First extentions 10, 11 extending from the lower margins of a pair of opposed sides 1, 2 are inwardly hingeable to form a pallet pack floor. The first extentions 10, 11 are dimensioned such that they extend across the full width of the pallet pack 1, though this is not essential.
Second extensions 12, 13 extending from the lower margins of the remaining pair of opposed sides 4, 5 are folded under the pallet floor to form a pair of square-section tubes. The tubes lie such that one side is adjacent and parallel to the pallet pack floor and another is in the plane of the pallet pack side to which the tube is attached, and are maintained in shape by staples 14, 15. Square-section rods 16, 17, formed from expanded polystyrene are frictionally engaged within the tubes.
The pallet pack 1 of the present invention may be supplied in flat-pack form, as shown in Figure 4, comprising a cardboard blank and two rods 16, 17. To assemble the pallet pack 1, the cardboard blank is opened out so that the sides 2, 3, 4, 5 form two parallel pairs. The tubes formed from the second extensions 12, 13 are then opened out from the position shown in Figure 4 and the rods 16, 17 inserted. The floor of the pallet pack is formed by inwardly folding the first extensions 10, 11 until they lie perpendicular to the side walls as shown in Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 5, the first extensions 10, 11 are held in their floor forming positions by rotating the tubes in the direction of the arrows E until they lie adjacent to the pallet pack floor. If required fastening means, such as staples, may be passed through the floor of the pallet pack 1 into the rods 16, 17, though this is not essential.
The pallet pack 1 may now be filled and the flaps 6, 7, 8, 9 folded down in the normal way to form a closure (see Figure 1). It is intended that the present invention will also be applied to open-topped pallet packs which lack the flaps 6, 7, 8, 9.
While the embodiment, described hereinbefore, makes use of cardboard for the pallet pack body and expanded polystyrene for the rods, it is envisaged that other materials such as plastics sheet, for the pallet pack body, and wood, for the rods, will be employed.

Claims (7)

1. An erectable pallet pack having a foot member arranged for pivotal movement into a pallet pack supporting position, wherein, when in said supporting position, the foot member locks the pallet pack in an erect form for use.
2. An erectable pallet pack according to claim 1, wherein there are two foot members which, when in respective said supporting positions, allow the pallet pack to be lifted by a fork-lift truck.
3. A pallet pack according to claim 1 or 2, comprising four sides arranged as two pairs of opposed sides, wherein a first pair of sides have extensions which encompass respective rods to form foot members and the second pair of sides have extensions which are inwardly hingeable to form a floor of the pallet pack.
4. A pallet pack according to claim 3, wherein, when in respective said supporting positions, the foot members lock the extensions of the second pair of sides in their floor forming configuration.
5. An erectable pallet pack according to claim 3 or 4, wherein each first extension is pre-formed into a tube for accepting its rod.
6. An erectable pallet pack according to any preceding claim wherein the body member is formed from cardboard and the rods are formed from expanded polystyrene.
7. An erectable pallet pack substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
