Description
PIPE JOINTS
The present invention relates to pipe joints and in particular to pipe joints for exhaust systems, the pipe joints accommodating annular and axial misalignments of the components of the exhaust system.
Hitherto, it has been known to provide a pipe joint in which a flared portion at the end of one length of pipe engages a part-spherical surface of a sealing ring mounted on the end of a second length of pipe, the lengths of pipe being maintained in engagement with one another by means of tie bolts with spring loading means.
Such joints provide three rotational degrees of freedom, each accommodating an angular misalignment of typically up to 30. Such joints are not however capable of accommodating axial misalignments as this would result in separation of the flared end of said one length of pipe from the part-spherical surface of the sealing ring which would result in leakage from the exhaust pipe.
The present invention provides a pipe joint which will provide three rotational degrees of freedom and one linear degree of freedom along the axis of the pipe.
According to one aspect of the present invention a pipe joint comprises a first length of pipe, the first length of pipe having a part-circular recess formed around its circumference adjacent to the end of said first length of pipe, a D-section split resilient sealing ring being located in the recess formed on the first length of pipe, the curved surface of the sealing ring engaging the curved surface of the recess, the first length of pipe and sealing ring telescopically engaging the end portion of a second length of pipe so that the sealing ring is depressed into the recess and the flat surface of the sealing ring slidably engages the opposed surface of the second length of pipe.
The sealing ring of the present invention will provide a seal between the two lengths of pipe while providing two rotational degrees of freedom each accommodating angular misalignments typically up to 30, a third rotational degree of freedom permitting 3600 rotation of one length of pipe relative to the other. The sealing ring will also permit axial movement of one length of pipe relative to the other.
An embodiment of the invention is now described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates in part-sectional elevation a pipe joint in accordance with the present invention.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing a first length of pipe 10 has a part-circular recess 11 formed around its circumference adjacent one end. The recess 11 may be formed by deforming the end of the pipe by means of rolling or any other suitable process. Alternatively, the recess 11 may be machined in a separate tubular element which may be secured around the pipe 10 in suitable manner.
A split sealing ring 12 is located in the recess 11. The split ring 12 is formed from resilient material, for example wrought stalite or stainless steel and is of Dsection, the curved surface of the sealing ring 12 engaging the curved surface of the recess 11.
The pipe 10 and sealing ring 12 are telescopically engaged in the end of a second pipe 13, so that the sealing ring 12 is compressed into the groove 11 and the flat surface of the sealing ring 12 slidably engages the inner surface of the pipe 13. With the first pipe 10 located in the second pipe 13 and the sealing ring 12 interposed therebetween, the gap between the ends of the split sealing ring 12 is preferably from 0.02mm to 0.15mm.
The end 14 of the pipe 13 is finally rolled over to prevent the two pipes from being separated, sufficient clearance being left between the end 14 of pipe 13 and pipe 10, to permit rotation of one pipe relative to the other of up to 30 in mutually perpendicular axial planes.
The pipes 10 and 13 are also free to rotate and slide axially relative to one another.
The pipe joint described above may typically be used to connect the various components of an exhaust system, for example pipes, silencer boxes and catalytic converters to one another, so that the orientation of one component relative to the other may be adjusted to appropriately locate each component with respect to the vehicle. In such exhaust systems, the first and second pipes of the pipe joint may be formed by the end pipes of the silencer boxes or catalytic converters. The joint will primarily provide for adjustment of one component relative to another while the exhaust system is initially being fitted to the vehicle or replacement parts are being fitted. After initial running of the engine any small leakage paths past the sealing ring will become sooted up to provide a good seal.
While in the above embodiment the sealing ring has been described as being of D-section, this is intended to cover a sealing ring of any section having a circular face which will engage the complementary circular surface of the groove to permit rotation in the axial planes, and a flat face for engagement of the opposed surface of the second pipe.
