Abstract
A flexible IBC (intermediate Bulk Container) 2 made from e.g polypropylene and containing a flowable material such as powder is supported by and connected to a pallet member 3 which is adapted to deform concomitantly in use with the IBC 2. A protective member 8 comprising a sheet of corrugated plastics may be attached to the base of the IBC 2 and include a removable panel 9 to allow material discharge. The removable panel 9 consists of an elongate tear-away panel 9 which extends between opposing ends 11 and 12 respectively of the protective member 8. The pallet may be secured to or formed separately from the IBC. <IMAGE>
Description
PALLETISED CONTAINERS
The invention relates to palletised containers and has particular relevance to flexible containers such as bags. Such containers may be used for containing and transporting a flowable material such as powder or other particulate material in bulk to a station such as a hopper at which the flowable material may be discharged.
It is often the case that the material has to be discharged at a height above ground level. This means that the container which is usually known as an IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) must be elevated before discharge. It is usual to lift the container by means of straps attached to the body from above by a crane.
Such lifting may be difficult in premises having low ceilings. Another problem which occurs is that if flexible containers are palletised for lifting using ordinary pallets, the flexible containers, being full of flowable material, may be damaged or broken by the rigid pallets as the material spreads and settles, thereby expanding the flexible containers.
A further problem with existing containers is that contamination may occur if they temporarily come into contact with water or dirt on the ground before being lifted for discharge.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome the above problems of the prior art.
In accordance with a first aspect of the invention there is provided material handling apparatus comprising a flexible container which is supported by (and preferably attached to) a pallet member which is adapted to deform concomitantly in use with the flexible container.
The container may comprise an IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container).
The container may be made from any flexible material, for example, a thermoplastic material such as polypropylene.
There may be a protective member attached to the base of the container.
The protective member may comprise a sheet of plastics or cardboard.
The protective member may be attached to the base of the container by any known manufacturing method such as wire stapling.
The protective member may include a removable panel to allow material discharge.
The removable panel may consist of an elongate tear-away panel which extends between opposing ends of the protective member.
The removable panel may include a handle or tab at one end which may be pulled to tear away the panel from the protective member.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a pallet member adapted to deform and expand concomitantly in use with a flexible container supported by it in use.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a method of palletising a flexible container comprising attaching a pallet member to a protective member of the container, which pallet member is adapted to deform and expand concomitantly in use with the container.
The pallet member may be assembled from a top bearing component and a base supporting component.
The pallet member may be manufactured from plastics or cardboard.
The pallet member may be connected to the protective member of the container by any known manufacturing method such as welding, wire stapling or riveting.
The pallet member may contain removable panels to accommodate a discharge hopper.
The pallet member may contain a discharge spout.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a front perspective view of material handling apparatus in accordance with a first aspect of the invention;
Fig.2 shows in perspective a pallet member in accordance with a second aspect of the invention;
Fig.3 shows in plan view a blank for forming the upper bearing component of a pallet member in accordance with a second aspect of the invention;
Fig.4 shows in plan view a blank for forming the base supporting component of a pallet member in accordance with a second aspect of the invention; Fig.5 shows in plan view a protective member for the material handling apparatus in accordance with the first aspect of the invention.
There is shown a material handling apparatus 1 comprising a flexible IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) 2 made from polypropylene and containing a flow able material such as powder. The container is supported by and connected to a pallet member 3 which is adapted to deform and expand concomitantly in use with the IBC 2. There is a protective member 8 comprising a sheet of corrugated plastics 8 attached to the base of the IBC 2. The protective member 8 includes a removable panel 9 to allow material discharge. The removable panel 9 consists of an elongate tear-away panel 9 which extends between opposing ends 11 and 12 respectively of the protective member 8. The removable panel 9 also includes a handle 10 at one end 11 which may be pulled to tear away the panel 9 completely from the IBC.The perforations- 13 are such that the panel 9 may be easily pulled away by an operator standing below or on the same level as the
IBC 2.
The pallet member 3 is adapted to deform and expand concomitantly in use with the IBC 2 supported by it in use. The pallet member 3 is assembled from a top bearing component 4 and a base supporting component 5, both of which are fteejtsne~L manufactured from corrugated plastics (such as that sold under the trade mark "Correx"). The protective member 9 is connected by means of wire stapling to the top bearing component 5 of the pallet member 3.
The top bearing surface 4 of the pallet member 3 has nine inserts 6 in its surface for assembled co-operation with nine tab members 7 contained in a base supporting component 5.
The pallet member 3 will usually contain a removable panel (not shown) to accommodate a discharge hopper (not shown) or the pallet member 3 may itself contain a discharge spout (not shown) which in use is positioned directly over the removable panel 9 when discharge is about to take place.
