Abstract
A banner is composed of at least two layers 2, 4 of material which are secured together, one of said layers having applied thereto a pattern, design or other promotional wording, the banner being capable of receiving ropes or other means so as to enable the banner to be displayed. The layers of material are secured together by sewing around the edges of the layers of the materials so as to form a channel along at least one of its edges through which the rope or other means can be passed to enable the banner to be displayed. One layer 2 is suitably a polyester fabric and carries the pattern, design or other promotional wording. The other layer 4 may be of a water-resistant non-woven material. The banner may be double sided and comprise two outer layers of polyester material and two inner layers of interlining material. <IMAGE>
Description
BANNERS
This invention relates to banners and the like which are used for display purposes, promotional and advertising purposes etc at business premises, entertainment shows and functions, fetes, and so on.
Conventionally, banners and the like are formed of PVC material and the banners, because they are not machine washable, need to be wiped down after use so as to remove dirt and other soiling before being put into storage for future use. Due to the inherent nature of PVC material, particularly in adverse weather conditions, the banners have a tendency to harden and are therefore difficult to roll up for storage and/or transportation purposes.
Banners have also been made of polyester material with the pattern, design or other promotional material printed or otherwise applied thereto, but such banners are almost transparent and therefore have inherent disadvantages.
The present invention seeks to overcome the disadvantages of conventional banners by providing an improved form of banner.
According to the present invention there is provided a banner or the like composed of at least two layers of material which are secured together, one of said layers having applied thereto a pattern, design or other promotional wording ff said banner being capable of receiving ropes or other means so as to enable the banner or the like to be displayed.
Preferably, a first of said layers of material will be a polyester fabric and will have the pattern, design or other promotional wording applied thereto
Said second layer of material will preferably be a nonwoven material, and more preferably an interlining, which will be water-resistant.
Said layers of material will preferably be secured together by sewing around the edges of the layers of the materials, the composite banner having a channel along at least one of its edges through which a rope or other means can be passed to enable the banner or the like to be displayed.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, wherein: - Figure 1 is an exploded fragmentary perspective view of layers of material prior to the formation of the banner or the like; and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of a banner or the like in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing and firstly to Figure 1, there is shown two layers 2 and 4 of material which are placed in contiguous relationship in readiness for being secured together so as to form the composite banner.
The first layer 2 of material is composed of a polyester material and will have a design, pattern, wording, or the like 6 applied thereto. Such design, pattern, wording, or the like will be printed or otherwise suitably applied to said layer 2.
The second layer 4 of material will be composed of a nonwoven material such as an interlining which is waterresistant. This layer of material is provided so as to give opacity to the banner or the like and to prevent puckering or undue distortion of the banner or the like.
As will be seen, the layer 2 of polyester is larger than the layer 4 of interlining, such that the layer 2 may be folded over the interlining and envelop the edges of said interlining
Referring now to Figure 2, it will be seen that the edges of the layer 2 are folded over the edges of the layer 4 and secured to itself - and to the interlining - by means of lines of sewing indicated generally by reference numerals 8. Such sewing forms along the top and bottom edges of the banner or the like, channels 10 and 12 through which ropes or other means 14 and 16 may pass to enable the banner or the like to be displayed.
With a banner or the like in accordance with the present invention, the banner or the like can be machine washed (at 400 Centigrade), will not pucker and distort, and will not harden so as to make it unmanageable as with banners or the like which are formed conventionally.
In addition to the channels along the top and bottom of the banner or the like, channels may also be formed along the other edges to enable ropes or other means to be passed therethrough.
The banner or the like may be double-sided, in which case the banner or the like will comprise four layers of material - two outer layers of a polyester material and two inner layers of interlining material. The four layers will be secured together, as described, by sewing, and the two outer layers will each carry a design, pattern, wording or the like.
It will be appreciated that material other than a polyester material may be used for the layer(s) 2.
Finally, it will be appreciated that battens may be inserted into the channels instead of the ropes, and that the banner or the like may be provided with eyelets along its edges instead of or in addition to the channels to enable the banner or the like to be displayed.
