Abstract
A system for packaging glass for vehicles provides for the use of a shock-resistant seal 12 disposed along the edge of the glass C, a holder member 14, (22 fig 4) with a punched board handle disposed astride the glass and a heat shrinkable sheet 20 which is wound about the glass, the seal and the holder member. The holder member can take two forms. The preferred holder member 14 is an elongated wrapper for folding centrally so as to extend around a mid-portion of the pane of glass. The second holder member (22, figure 4) is substantially l shaped and has portions glued to either side of the shock-resistant seal 12. <IMAGE>
Description
"System for packaging glass for vehicles"
The present invention relates to a system for packaging glass, particularly for vehicle windscreens and rear windows.
The need for a safe and reliable packaging system for windscreens, rear windows and the like is well known both in the sector of initial supplies to vehicle manufacturers and in the spare parts sector. The present invention is directed at a packaging system which is safe, economic and adapted to facilitate the manual transportation of the glass.
According to the invention, a packaging system for a pane of glass comprises a shock-resistant seal disposed along the edge of the glass, a holder member typically of punched board or like material folded and disposed astride the glass, which folded member forms two flaps facing one another and each having a first portion projecting laterally with respect to the edge of the glass and provided with an aperture, to form a handle and a second portion superimposed on the glass, and a sheet of heat shrinkable polymer material wound about the glass, the seal and the holder member. A glass enclosed by a packaging system of the invention thus takes the form of a single unit from which a convenient carrying handle projects laterally.
Two embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of non-limiting example, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vehicle windscreen packaged using a system of the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-section on the line II-II of
Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the holder member of the packaging system in an open configuration;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing a variant of the packaging system of Figures 1 to 3; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of the holder member of the packaging system shown in Figure 4 in an open configuration.
In the drawings, reference numeral 10 designates an overall packaging for a vehicle windscreen or rear window bearing the reference C and called a pane below. A shockresistant seal 12 of expanded polymer material is disposed along the peripheral edge of the pane.
A holder member 14 of punched board having an elongate shape and provided centrally with two score lines 14a adapted to allow it to be folded is disposed astride the pane C in a central position. The holder member 14 has two ends 14b each provided with two score lines 14c so as to allow holder portions 16, each provided with an aperture 18, to be disposed facing one another and in contact when the packaging is made up. It will be appreciated that the holder member 14, once it has been folded about the glass, forms two flaps 15 facing one another and each having a first portion 15a facing and superimposed on the pane C and a second portion 15b projecting laterally with respect to the edge of the glass.
A sheet of heat shrinkable polymer material 20 is then wound about the pane C, the holder member 14 and the seal 12 so as to hold the various elements of the packaging and the pane C together. In order to allow the transportation of the packaging 10 it is enough to break, for instance with the fingers or with a pointed object, the portion of heat shrinkable sheet superimposed over the apertures 18 of the holder portions 16 which may advantageously be joined together by adhesive or clamping.
Figures 4 and 5 show a variant of the packaging system in which similar components bear the same reference numerals.
In this variant, the elongate holder member wound about the pane C is replaced by a holder member 22 shaped, in plan view in its open configuration, substantially as an
I with a central portion 22a and two wider end portions 22b. The central portion 22a is further divided into two portions 24 by a central score line 26 so as to allow its folding so that these portions are superimposed on one another. Each portion 24, in a similar manner to the holder member 14, has an aperture 28 adapted to allow the use of the member 22 as a carrying handle.
The end portions 22b of the holder member 22 each have two score lines 30 and 32-adapted to allow the superimposition of end flaps 34 on the edge zone of the pane C as shown in Figure 4.
In order to maintain the holder member 22 in place relative to the pane C, the end flaps 34 of this member may be glued or simply superimposed on the seal 12.
Claims (6)
1. A system for packaging a pane of glass, the system comprising a shock-resistant seal for disposition along the edge of a pane of glass; a holder member adapted to be folded and disposed astride a said pane, which holder member, when folded and so disposed forms two flaps facing one another, each having a first portion projecting laterally with respect to the edge of a said pane and provided with an aperture, and a second portion overlaying at least an edge portion of said pane; and a sheet of heat shrinkable polymer material for enclosing a said pane of glass, the seal, and the holder member.
2. A system according to Claim 1 wherein the holder member is shaped as an elongate wrapper for folding centrally so as to extend around a mid-portion of a said pane of glass, the facing ends of the wrapper forming said first portions of the holder member.
3. A system according to Claim 1 wherein the holder member has, in its open configuration, substantially the shape of an I, and in its folded configuration, the first portions are those portions in juxtaposition on either side of the fold line.
4. A system according to Claim 3 wherein the second portions each have a greater area than either first portion.
5. A system according to Claim 3 or Claim 4 including means for glueing the second portions of the holder member to the shock-resistant seal.
6. A system for packaging a pane of glass substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 to 3 or Figures 4 and 5 of the accompanying drawings.
