Abstract
A waterborne craft such as a sailboard 2 comprises a projection 22 extending outwardly from each side of the hull 4, each projection 22 having at its outer end a downwardly extending portion 26 in the form of a blade which tapers to a bottom edge 27. A sail mast is received within a pivotally mounted tubular shaft on the deck of the craft which comprises a glass fibre material. <IMAGE>
Description
A WATERBORNE CRAFT
The present invention relates to a waterborne craft and
particularly but not exclusively to a sailboard.
According to the present invention there is provided a
waterborne craft comprising a hull and a projection extending outwardly from each side of the hull, each projection having at a region remote from the hull a downwardly extending portion.
The craft may comprise a sail support for attachment
thereto of a sail mast.
The sail support may comprise a tubular shaft mounted at
its lower end to the deck of the craft.
The support may be pivotally mounted to the deck of the
craft.
The craft may comprise a mast to which is attached a
sail, the mast being received within the support.
The craft may comprise a glass fibre material.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a side view of an embodiment of a
sailboard according to the present invention, and
Figure 2 shows a front view of the sailboard shown in
Figure 1
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a sailboard 2 comprises a glass fibre hull 4 and a sail support 6 in the form of a tubular shaft pivotally mounted at its lower end to the deck 8 of the sailboard. Received within the sail support 6 is a mast 10 to which is attached a sail 12. Also attached to the mast 10 is a boom 14. The boom is further attached to the opposite side of the sail 12. Extending downwards from the boom 14 is a rope 16 to enable the boom 14 and thereby the sail 12 to be rotated about the axis of the sail support 6.Further ropes 18 and 20 extend between the sail support 6 and the deck 8 of the sailboard 2.
Extending outwardly from each side of the hull 4 of the sailboard 2 is a projection 22 having a width which is sufficient to enable a person 24 to sit whilst holding the rope 16 attached to the sail 12. At its outer end each projection 22 has a downwardly extending portion 26 which tapers to a bottom edge 27.
The inside surface of each projection 22 and each downwardly extending portion 26 is in the form of an aerofoil section which provides a venturi shape underneath. This produces a downward force when the sailboard 2 is in motion and helps to prevent the sailboard 2 taking off in a good breeze.
Whilst the sailboard is horizontal the bottom edge 27 is above the surface of the water as shown in Figure 2, but when the sailboard inclines one of the downwardly extending portions 26 which acts as a blade penetrates the water. This enables the sailboard 2 to be used relatively safely by an inexperienced person. Also the blades 26 help the sailboard to travel faster than a sailboard wihout such blades 26. Speeds of up to 20 knots are possible. The projections 22 can be detached from the hull 4 of the sailboard 2 and replaced with projections 22 of different configuration.
Alternatively, the sailboard 2 can be used without either projection 22. The provision of a tubular sail support 6 enables masts 10 and sails 12 of different size to be used by simply removing the mast from inside the sail support 6 and inserting a different mast 10.
Claims (8)
1 A waterborne craft comprising a hull and a projection
extending outwardly from each side of the hull, each
projection having at a region remote from the hull a
downwardly extending portion.
2 A craft as claimed in claim 1, wherein the inside
surface of each projection and downwardly extending
portion is in the form of an aerofoil section which
provides a venturi shape underneath.
3 A craft as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, comprising
a sail support for attachment thereto of a sail mast.
4 A craft as claimed in claim 3 wherein the sail
support comprises a tubular shaft mounted at its
lower end to deck of the craft.
5 A craft as claimed in claim 4, wherein the support is
pivotally mounted to the deck of the craft.
6 A craft as claimed in any one of claims 3 to 6,
comprising a mast to which is attached a sail, the
mast being received within the support.
7 A craft as claimed in in any one of the preceding
claims, wherein the craft comprises a glass fibre
material.
8 A waterborne craft substantially as hereinbefore
described with reference to the accompanying
drawings.
