Abstract
n-Propyl and n-butyl resorcinols are prepared in a pure state, for use for example therapeutically, by heating resorcinol with pure propionic or pure n-butyric acid in presence of a condensing agent, such as zinc chloride, separating and purifying the intermediate ketone, reducing it, such as by zinc amalgam and hydrochloric acid, and finally purifying the resulting n-propyl or n-butyl resorcinol by vacuum distillation and recrystallization from benzene. The intermediate ketone may be purified by distillation in vacuo. An example shows the preparation of the n-propyl body. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited to the use of the pure acids and refers also to other methods of purifying the final alkyl resorcinol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
