Abstract

224,662. McDowell, J. C. Sept. 28, 1923. Controlling levers associated with hand steering- devices; flexible transmitters. - Variable speed gear controlling-mechanism for motor vehicles and other machines comprises upper and lower members each adapted to slide and rotate, the lower member carrying an arm operating the gear shift rods, and flexible means connecting the two members so that the movements of the upper are communicated to the lower one. The sliding rods 24, 25 operate the gear forks 26, 28 and have forked shoulders 31, 32 adapted to be engaged bv a sliding and rocking arm 62 on a shaft 40. The shaft 40 is connected by a flexible shaft passing through a guide tube 43 to a shaft 41 which is mounted on the steering-column and carries a hand-lever 51 close to the steering-wheel. A pin 61, Fig. 7, on the shaft 41 works in a gate 54 formed in a bearing bracket 48 for the shaft, so that the shaft can be moved axially to select one of the rods 24, 25 and then rotated to slide the selected rod and thus effect one of the gear changes. The arm 62 on the shaft 40 tends always to return to the neutral position, being constrained by springs 66, 67. In a modification, the hand-lever 51 is pivoted to a rotatable socket on the steering column and its end is pivotally connected to the end of the shaft 40.
