Abstract

224,578. Salerni, P. M. July 13, 1923. Razors, safety. A safety-razor blade of the type which is comparatively rigid and approximately wedge-shaped in cross-section is provided with a guard member which is carried by the blade itself and extends along the edge thereof at a little distance therefrom so as to be free to turn or to be turned to a limited extent to each side of the blade and thus avoid injury to the fingers in whetting it by devices of the type in which the blade is rocked at the end of each reciprocation over the whetting surface or in manipulating it. As shown the guard member b, Figs. 1, 3 and 4 has resilient side arms b<1>, b<2> pivoted to the blade a by projections engaging recesses d in the ends thereon; at the opposite side of the pivot to the blade edge the arm b<1> carries a conical or tapered pin e disposed in a recess e<1> in one end of the blade so that the movement of the guard is limited and the centre of the recess is out of line with the centre of the recess d and the edge of the blade so that the movement of the guard member is greater on one side of the blade than on the other. The movement of the guard is adjusted by a milled collar e<2> rotatably mounted on the pin e and having a rounded teat e<3> which has frictional engagement. with one or other of a series of recesses in the inclined or helical inner face of the arm b<1>. The arm b<2> similarly carries a, projection f<1> formed by a steel sphere embedded therein and engaging with one or other of a pair of shallow conical and closely adjacent recesses f in the end of the blade and arranged symmetrically with respect to the recess e<1>; as the guard is turned from one side of the blade to the other the projection f<1> is caused to mount up the side of the recess in which it is. located against the resilience of the arm b<2> and eventually to pass over the junction between the two recesses when the resilience of the guard member causes the latter part of its movement down towards the centre of the other recess to take place automatically. The blade and guard member may be used in known types of holders e.g. the holder described in Specification 184,514 or the guard member b may form the sole guard in shaving when the blade holder may consist merely of a handle l, Fig. 9, and a bracket or clip device g into which the blade and guard member are slid endwise; a spring-pressed sphere h disposed in the handle engages one or other of recesses i arranged one on each side of the blade and midway between its ends. The recesses e<1> f may be in the middle of the ends of the blade and the pivots d out of line with them and the edge of the blade or the parts e, f may be out of line with the pivots d, recesses e<1>, f and the edge of the blade. Specifications 7066/09 and 5355/11 also are referred to.
