Abstract

A vehicle parking brake is automatically applied when the vehicle is stationary and is released by sensors which detect motion of the drive shaft (5). The brakes are applied by a servo motor (1) when the shaft is stationary. An overriding button when the ignition is "on" allows the vehicle to free-wheel if required. The brake cannot be released when the ignition key is removed. The servo motor either tensions brake cables or in a hydraulic system operates a piston of a master cylinder. <IMAGE>

Description

PATENT OF VEHICLE/AUTOMOBILE PARKING BRAKE FEATURES The conventional manually operated parking brake either hand or foot operated is replaced with an electrically operated servo motor that tensions the brake cables in the conventional method where it is felt desirable to retain a secondary braking system to the hydraulic system. The arresting brake is automatically applied whenever the vehicle comes to a standstill. In a hydraulics only braking system the servo motor operates the brake master cylinder pressurising the hydraulic fluid thereby activating the brakes.
DESCRIPTION Servo Motor: The unit retains a charge sufficient to operate for an extended period should power be disconected or the battery removed. To activate the parking brake, the motor operates a piston which extends, tensioning the brake cables in a cable system. In an hydraulic system the motor operates the piston which pressurises the master cylinder.
METHOD OF ACTIVATION.
Various sensors activate the system.
Operation Mode 1: With the ignition on.
The system is activated "on" at all times that the vehicle is stationary. Drive power when sensed from the drive shaft sensors activate the system "off". To free Wheel in neutral an overriding push switch will activate the system "off". The push switch is illuminated when in the "on" position Static Mode 2: With the ignition off.
Turning the ignition off does not turn the system off". The power to the braking system is redirected to the charged servo motor. The illuminated push switch will remain on for 30 seconds.
The parking brake system can only be set to "operation mode" by inserting the ignition key therefore acting as an additional anti theft device.
Definition "off": Parking brake released "on" : Parking brake on

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS VEHICLE/AUTOMOBILE PARKING BRAKE.
I claim the invention of an automatic parking brake for any motorised moving vehicle or object.
In place of the conventional hand operated or foot operated parking brake, a servo motor applies the brakes when sensors detect that the vehicle or object is in a stationary position.
The servo motor automatically releases the brakes when it senses that drive power is detected from the engine.
The brake can also be overridden to enable the vehicle or object to free wheel by a manual switch.
The servo assisted parking brake system cannot be released unless the ignition key is in the ignition switch.
