Abstract

The steering wheel (1) is formed as an annulus having a row of gear tooth (2) extending over at least a portion of its inner periphery. The lower portion of the steering wheel is slidably guided for rotary movement in a housing (3) which is fixed relative to the axis of the steering column (4). The gear teeth (2) mesh directly with a pinion (5) which is concentric and fast with the steering column. The major part of the steering wheel is thus open and above the steering column to optimize the visibility of the dashboard instrumentation. <IMAGE>

Description

Vehicle Steering Wheel Assemblies This invention relates to steering wheel assemblies, particularly, but not exclusively, for road vehicles.
In a presently preferred form of the invention, the steering wheel proper is formed as an annulus having a row of gear teeth extending over at least a portion of its inner periphery and its lower portion is slidably guided for rotary movement in a housing which is fixed in relation to the axis of the steering column, the said gear meshing directly with a pinion concentric and fast with the steering column.
With this arrangement, the major part of the steering annulus or ring, which is completely open, is positioned above the steering column to optimize visibility of the dashboard instrumentation.
The preferred form of the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is an axial view of the steering ring assembly, with the top part of the housing omitted in the interests of clarity.
The steering ring is in the form of a complete annulus 1, formed over at least a portion of its inner periphery with a row of gear teeth 2 (shown in white in the drawing). The steering ring is slidably guided in an arcuate guideway formed in a housing 3, of which only the lower half is shown in the drawing, so that the ring is supported for rotation about its centre of curvature.
The housing 3 is fixed relative to the axis of the steering column, the shaft 4 of which carries (or is integral with) a pinion 5 which-meshes with the gear teeth 2.
Thus rotation of the steering ring about its centre of curvature will effect rotation of the pinion 5 and the steering column shaft 4.
In addition to providing excellent visibility of the dashboard instrumentation, the design of the steering ring assembly reduces the risk of serious injury in a collision thanks to the absence of conventional spokes and a centrally positioned steering wheel hub.

Claims (4)

1. A steering wheel assembly comprising a steering wheel formed as an annulus having a row of gear teeth extending over at least a portion of its inner periphery, the lower portion of the steering wheel being slidably guided for rotary movement in a housing which is fixed in relation to the axis of the steering column, the said gear teeth meshing directly with a pinion concentric and fast with the steering column.
2. A steering wheel assembly according to claim 1 wherein the lower portion of the steering wheel is slidably guided for rotary movement in an arcuate guideway in the housing.
3. A steering wheel assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said housing comprises an upper part and a lower part which fit together to accommodate the lower portion of the steering wheel.
4. A steering wheel substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
