Coating - machines. - In machines for applying adhesive to labels &c. in which the labels 4, Fig. 1, are supported within a container on a spring-pressed membe.r 5, and are withdrawn singly and intermittently by a picking roller 8 and fed over an adhesive applying roller 17 the labels are retained in the container by a presser member 7 normally pressed on to the surface of the top label by a spring 11, and intermittently raised to release the labels. The spring-pressed member 5 may be raised or lowered by means of a lever 4, Fig. 2. The presser is adjusted horizontally by screws 13 so as to press on the rear edge of the labels, and is intermittently raised either automatically by a pin 30, projecting from a wheel 31, which engages a bevelled end 32<a>, Fig. 2, of a pivoted lever 32 and lifts the forked end 32<b> of the lever and thereby the nut 32<c>, or manually by a lever 37 having a fork 37<a> disposed beneath the nut 32<c>. The gumming-roller 17 receives its adhesive from a roller 18 revolving in a trough 19. The gum supply may be varied by arranging the rollers 17 and 18 out of vertical alignment, Fig. 5, and pivotally mounting a roller 60 to press against the roller 17. An adjustable scraper is also provided. Roller 16 has circumferential ridges 22, and is provided with a wiping pad 23. The gummed labels are delivered on to inclined bars 26, and are buckled up to facilitate removal by contact with projecting pins 28. In conjunction with the picking roller 8, a stamping or printing device 39, Figs. 3 and 4, contacting with an inking roller 41, supplied by a roller 42 having an ink-container 43 mounted thereon, may be provided. Means for automatically affixing the gummed labels upon boxes, bottles, &c. comprises a table 70, Fig. 7, upon which the box 71 is placed, a spring-pressed roller 72 carried by pivoted arms 73, and bars 78 sliding in guides 79. The labels are conveyed from the gumming- machine by a conveyer 77 on to the bars 78, which by means of a chain 76 and links 81 are drawn over the box. The bars 78 automatically spring apart and deposit the label, which is pressed on to the box by the roller 72 on the return movement.
