Abstract

An adaptor head for facilitating the covering of a circular inspection chamber with a square cover is achieved by removing a circular portion of the square base plate of the frame. The diameter of this removed portion equals the diameter of the inspection chamber. The cover is located on the frame by a fabricated channel and the frame is located on the inspection chamber by rolled circular bands.

Description

A SQUARE TO ROUND INSPECTION CHAMBER COVER AND FRAME.
This invention relates to a square to round inspection chamber cover and frame fabricated from mild steel. The cover and frame is primarily to be used in conjunction with circular plastic (UPVC) chambers but may also (where size is appropriate) be suitable for circular concrete chambers.
In most cases UPVC circular chambers are covered using circular cast iron covers. These are prohibitively expensive.
Furthermore they are prone to collapse as a result of high impact or excessive traffic loading.
According to the present invention, a frame (to be described below) is fabricated and on this is placed a conventional mild steel cover-which is square in configuration.
A square plate approximately 530mm x 530mm is cut. A central disc approximately 430mm diameter is removed and discarded. To the under side of the modified plate are welded two circular rings. The position of these rings are such that they enable a secure placement on a significant number of plastic chambers from different manufacturers even though the diameters of the chambers vary.
To the upper side of the modified plate aforementioned are welded two strips of mild steel which take up square configuration, one having larger dimensions than the other.
This creates a space again with a square configuration and it is into this space that a conventional cover in mild steel is placed.
FIG 1 shows an underside view of plate PQRS (referred to above) from which the circular disc has been removed along circumference marked X. A and B refer to rolled mild steel strips of circular configuration. These project at 90 deg.
from the above plate and are approximately 20mm deep. These provide secure placement on the chamber.
FIG 2 shows plate PQRS (a top view). EFGH refers to a strip of metal which is welded to the plate and projects at 90 deg.
approximately 20mm in distance. IJKL refers to a second strip of mild steel again of square configuration welded and projecting at 90 deg. a distance of approximately 12mm. The distance between IJKL and EFGH is approximately lOmm. This lOmm channel permits the fitting of a conventional square mild steel galvanized cover which has a 20mm downturned lip and is square in configuration.

Claims (6)

1 A square to round inspection chamber cover and frame in fabricated mild steel which facilitates the covering of a circular inspection chamber with a square cover.
2 A square to round inspection chamber cover and frame as claimed in 1 which is located on top of a circular inspection chamber by the provision of rolled circular bands of mild steel.
3 A square to round inspection chamber cover and frame as claimed in 2 whereby the rolled circular bands provide resistance to lateral pressures on the chamber walls when the chamber is installed.
4 A square to round inspection chamber cover and frame as claimed in 1 wherein the conversion from square to round configuration is achieved by removing a circular portion of a square frame base plate. The diameter of the removed portion equals the diameter of the inspection chamber.
5 A square to round inspection chamber cover and frame on which a square cover is fitted on top of the square frame base plate (circular portion removed) as claimed in 4 and located there on by a fabricated channel, see drawing.
6 A square to round fabricated mild steel cover and frame as claimed in 1 which is provided with a lip on each of the four outer edges of the frame, this secures alignment when it is bedded and covered in fine aggregated concrete.
