Abstract

Levels. - In instruments employing a reversible bubble tube mounted on a rotatable telescope, to reduce the number of readings to be taken in ascertaining the true horizontal the tube is rotatably mounted about its longitudinal axis of symmetry so that rotation around this axis produces no movement of the air bell relatively to the tube. The tube 1 is mounted in adjustable bearings which are adjusted until rotation about the axis 4, 5 produces no movement of the air bell in relation to the central plane 7 of the tube. The tube is provided with graduations 8 equidistant from the plane 7 and these may be read by a prism device 9 of the kind described in Specification 17944/10. Fig. 3 shows a form of graduation comprising marks 12, 13 at equal distances from the plane 7 on one side and marks 14, 15 at different, but also equal, distances from the plane 7 on the other side. By providing a movable pointer in conjunction with the device 9 a single mark only is required. To avoid parallax errors, lines may be marked on the inner and outer surfaces of the bubble tube, these lines being brought into coincidence when reading the level.
