Abstract
A jack plug connector comprises an outer contact plug body 5 and an inner contact ferrule 6 which extends, on assembly, axially through the body 5 and terminates in a separately formed nose 7. A clamp ring 11 grips an outer conductor 4 and electrically connects it to the body 5. A pair of axially aligned access holes 12 in the body 5 allow access to be gained to the ferrule 6 for crimping the bared end of an inner cable conductor 3 to the ferrule 6 at 13. The mounting means and the end portion of the cable 2 are covered by a support barrel 15 which screw threadingly engages with the body 5 and includes a plurality of spaced-apart through holes 16. When the barrel 15 has been attached to the body 5, the sub-assembly is placed in a mould and a flexible body 20 of elastomeric material is moulded around the barrel 15 and the end portion of the cable 2. During moulding-on of the body 20 elastomeric material passes through the holes 16 in the barrel 15 and encapsulates the exposed ends of the conductors of the cable, the mounting means, a portion of the body 5 and the end of the ferrule 6. <IMAGE>
Description
A Jack Plua Connector
The invention relates to a plug connector and in particular to a jack plug connector for a cable having at least one or possibly several inner conductors and an outer conductor.
According to the invention there is provided a jack plug connector for a cable having at least one inner conductor and an outer conductor, the connector comprisings an outer contact plug body;
an inner contact ferrule extending axially through the
outer contact body;
insulating means between the inner ferrule and outer
contact body;
means for mounting the inner conductor to the inner
contact ferrule;
means for mounting the outer conductor to the outer
contact body; and
a flexible body moulded around the mounting means, at
least part of the contact body and portion of the cable
to provide -a flexible non-rewirable body having cable
strain and flexure relief.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the mounting means for the inner conductor comprises access means in the outer contact plug body through which access is gained to the inner contact ferrule for crimping the inner cable conductor to the inner contact ferrule.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the access means comprises at least a pair of aligned access holes.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the mounting means for the outer contact plug body comprises a clamp ring which grips the outer conductor and electrically connects it to the outer contact plug body.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention at least the mounting means are covered with a support barrel prior to moulding-on of the flexible body.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the barrel extends axially rearwardly to cover portion of the cable.
Preferably the barrel is engaged with the plug contact body, for example, by a screw threading engagement.
In one embodiment of the invention the barrel includes at least one and preferably a plurality of spaced-apart holes through which elastic material passes to encapsulate portion of the cable, the mounting means and portion of the outer contact plug body on rnoulding-on of the flexible body.
The invention will be more clearly understood -from the following description thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a per4pective view of a jack plug connector
according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the jack plug connector of
Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a partially exploded view of the jack plug
connector, zig. 4 is a longitudinal cross-sectionnl view of the jack
plug connector,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of portion of
the connector,
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of an outer contact
plug body of the connector,
Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of an inner contact
ferrule of the connector,
Fig. 8 is a side elevational view of a barrel of the
connector, and
Fig. 9 is a side elevational view of a nose of the
connector.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a jack plug connector according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 for a cable 2 having in this case one inner conductor 3 and an outer conductor 4. The connector 1 comprises an outer contact plug body 5, an inner contact ferrule 6 which extends, on assembly, axially through the outer contact body 5 and terminates in a separately formed nose 7. Insulators 9, 10 are provided between the inner ferrule 6 and outer contact body 5 to electrically insulate one from the other. Means for mounting the outer conductor 4 to the outer contact body 5 comprises a clamp ring 11 which grips the outer conductor 4 and electrically connects it to the outer contact plug body 5.
Means for mounting the inner conductor 3 to the inner contact ferrule 6 comprises access means in the outer contact plug body 5, in this case, provided by a pair of axially aligned access holes 12 through which access is gained to the inner contact ferrule 6 for crimping the bared end of the inner cable conductor 3 to the inner contact ferrule 6 at 13 as will be particularly apparent from Figs. 4 and 5.
At least the mounting means, and in this case, also portion of the cable 2 are covered by a support barrel 15 which has a screw threaded portion 19 to engage with a complementary screw threaded portion 18 on the plug contact body 5. The barrel 15 includes at least one, and in this case, a plurality of spaced-apart through holes 16.
The connector plug 1 of the invention is assembled as will be apparent from Fig. 4 and when the barrel 15 has been attached to the outer contact plug body 5, the sub-assembly thus formed is then placed in a mould and a flexible body 20 of elastomeric material is moulded around the barrel 15 and portion of the cable 2 as illustrated in Fig. 4 and also forms a cable strain and flexure relief section 25. During moulding-on of the body 20 elastomeric material passes through the holes 16 in the barrel 15 and indeed, through the access holes 12 in the outer contact plug body 5 to encapsulate the exposed ends of the conductors of the cable, the mounting means, portion of the outer contact plug body 5 and the inner contact ferrule 6.
The invention provides a jack plug which is easily assembled and in which superior quality electrical connection is provided by virtue of the crimping of the inner contact ferrule to the exposed end of the inner conductor of the cable and which, by virtue of the moulded plastic body, is nonrewirable.
Many variations on the specific embodiment of the invention described will be readily apparent and accordingly, the invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail.
