Abstract

The cutting tool has an irregular tooth arrangement. This may be equivalent to removing one or more teeth from an otherwise regular array, or it may be by having uneven spacing throughout. It is particularly effective for fluted cylindrical tools such as milling cutters.

Description

"Improvements relatina to Rotarv Cutting Tools" This invention relates to rotary cutting tools, and is particularly applicable to milling cutters.
Conventional wisdom is that, in such tools, the teeth or ribs should be uniformly spaced. This not only keeps the tool balanced but also maintains even co-operation with the workpiece, which is believed to be conducive to efficiency and a clean cut.
According to the present invention there is provided a toothed rotary cutting tool in which the teeth are irregularly arranged.
In the preferred form the teeth are formed by flutes in a generally cylindrical tool body, and usually the flutes will be helical, as in a milling cutter.
The irregularity may be equivalent to one or more missing teeth in a would-be regular array, and in one simple but effective form there is one such missing tooth in a would-be regular array of three. Alternatively the irregularity is from uneven spacing of the teeth throughout the arrangement.
It has been found that on rotary tools such as milling cutters the effect of such uneveness can have amazing results. For example, in one comparative trial, using a normal cutter and a cutter with uneven teeth, both cutters being of the same size and shape, identically powered and applied to the same quality workpiece, the unevenly toothed cutter completed the job about three times as fast as the normal one. This improved performance is particularly noticeable when "eating away" solid metal, as in making a slot, rather than when "nibbling", as in taking a shaving off a surface or edge.

Claims (7)

1. A toothed rotary cutting tool in which the teeth are irregularly arranged.
2. A tool as claimed in Claim 1, wherein teeth are formed by flutes in a generally cylindrical tool body.
3. A tool as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the flutes are helical.
4. A tool as claimed in Claim 2 or 3, wherein the tool is a milling cutter.
5. A tool as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein the irregularity is equivalent to one or more missing teeth in a would-be regular array.
6. A tool as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the uneven spacing is equivalent to one missing tooth in a would-be regular array of three.
7. A tool as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the irregularity is from uneven spacing of the teeth throughout the arrangement.
