Abstract

In order to protect an interior door while a room is being decorated, a fabric or paper envelope is fitted over the door. The envelope can be formed from a nylon sheet (10) which is provided along opposed edges with VELCRO pads (12) and strips (13) which are engaged to hold the envelope in position on the door (11). <IMAGE>

Description

DECORATORS' AIDS Field of the Invention This invention relates to a decorator's aid and is concerned with the provision of means for protecting an interior door while a room is being decorated.
An increasing proportion of interior doors are formed of sapele or other decorative or polished woods and there is accordingly a growing requirement for protecting such doors while decorating, particularly paint spraying, artexing or using rollers, is being carried out.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide a decorator's aid which can be used for this purpose.
Summary of the Invention According to the present invention there is provided a decorator's aid which comprises a sheet or sheets of fabric material which define an envelope, or which are provided with means whereby an envelope can be defined, which envelope can be fitted over a door or assembled around a door, and then closed around the door.
The fabric material from which the sheet or sheets is or are formed is preferably a water- and paint-impervious material, for example a fine nylon mesh which may or may not be treated with a water-proofing agent. The material is preferably a light-weight material which can readily be folded so that, for storage purposes the sheet or sheets can be rolled up and placed within a storage sleeve. The fabric material may, alternatively be a paper-based material which is appropriately treated to render it paint-resistant. The cost of such a paperbased material can be such that it is economic for the home handyman to use the aid say once or twice when decorating, and then dispose of the used aid.
The means for closing the envelope around the door preferably comprises pads or strips of releasable fasteners such as those sold under the Registered Trade Mark VELCRO.
Other forms of releasable fasteners which can be used include ties, press studs and clips.
Brief Description of the Drawing The single figure of the accompanying drawing is a partly broken away perspective view of a decorator's aid fitted to a door.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment The decorator's aid shown in the drawing comprises a nylon sheet 10 of rectangular form and having a width corresponding to twice the width of a standard interior door 11. The sheet 10 has a height corresponding to the height of a standard interior door and is folded in half and sewn or otherwise bonded along one side, which corresponds to the top of the door 11, to form an envelope which is of such size that, when the door 11 is open, the nylon sheet 10 can be slipped over the door.
VELCRO pads 12 are are provided along one of the edges of the sheet 10 and VELCRO strips 13 are provided along the opposite side of the sheet 10 so that, when the envelope is fitted over the door, the strips 13 can be passed through the gap between the door frame and the edge of the door 11 for engagement with the pads 12. The aid can thus be fitted in position very simply and, after decorating has been completed, the aid can just as easily be removed from the door 11.
The envelope which is formed by folding a single sheet in half may equally well be formed from two sheets each corresponding in size to that of a door, the two sheets being sewn or bonded together to form an envelope. One or both of the sheets may be provided with a reinforcement or strengthening panel in the form of extra thicknesses of material in that area which corresponds to the door latch.
Prior to decorating a room, the door 11 is opened, the envelope is slipped on to the door 11, the VELCRO strips 13 are urged through the gap between the edge of the door 11 and the frame, and engaged with the pads 12 so as to provide a complete enclosure around the door. The provision of the reinforcement or strengthening panel, if required, ensures that the door can be closed without damaging the material.
In another example (not shown), the decorator's aid comprises a single sheet of an appropriate material having a width slightly greater than the width of a standard interior door and a length slightly greater than twice the height of a standard interior door. The sheet of material is provided at its ends with VELCRO pads so that the sheet can be placed over a door and the ends then joined together. The sheet is similarly provided along one edge with a spaced row of pads which are disposed, for half the length of the sheet, on one side of the sheet and which, for the other half of the length of the sheet, are disposed on the other side of the sheet.
Thus, when the sheet is fitted over the door, the material can be overlapped along the free edge of the door and the overlapping layers joined together using the VELCRO pads.
Along the other edge of the sheet, VELCRO strips and pads or other fasteners will be provided as described above so that the envelope can be completed and closed along the hinged edge of the door. A reinforcing panel can again be provided at the position which will be occupied by the door latch.
In a further example (not shown), the envelope is formed from a sheet or sheets of an appropriately treated paper-based material the cost of which is such that, after being used once or twice, disposal of the aid is economic. The envelope is provided with releasable fasteners so that it can be closed around the door and the method of use is as described in detail above.
