The members protrude about 50mm above the slab (12), and the assembly is completed by a steel or aluminium tray (16) fitted under the lower face of the slab. A breather membrane (18) may be fitted over the panel and secured to the protruding timber members (14). A neoprene vapour seal (22) may be provided between adjacent panels. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Building Panels Field of invention This invention relates to building panels incorporating thermal insulating material and to a method of manufacture thereof.
Background to the invention Building panels are known of a type in which a slab of thermal insulating material is sandwiched between rigid or semi-rigid sheets of plastics material or metal. It has also been proposed in copending UK application No.
8901649 (C150/E) to increase the rigidity of such a building panel by fitting rigid channel members along rebated edges of the slab or insulting material and securing a shallow tray to the lower face of the slab.
However, such a proposed construction of panel, which is particularly suited to Mansard type roof constructions, may prove to be rather expensive to manufacture.
Summary of the invention According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a building panel comprising an elongate rectangular slab of thermal insulating material having upper and lower faces and two longer edges, a rigid side member mounted along each longer edge of the slab, the sectional height of each side member being greater than the thickness of the slab so that a section of the sidemember protrudes beyond one face of the slab, and a shallow tray fitted against the other face of the slab and having upturned edges engaging and being secured to the side members.
When employing the panel as a wall or roofing panel with the sand one face thereof outermost or uppermost, the protruding the side members may be employed as counter battens for securing tiling battens thereto for fixing tiles or slates thereto.
Typically the height of the protruding side members is of the order of 55 mm above the said one face od the slab.
The side members may be formed wholly or partially from timber.
The tray is preferably made of metal, e.g. steel or aluminium, and may be finished on its underside with a decorative finish as by painting at plaster coating.
The tray may be secured to each side member by nails or staples, particularly where the members are made of timber.
The tray may be adhesively secured, as by glue, to the side member and/or to the slab of insulating material.
The slab of insulating material may be mineral wool, rock fibre or a foam insulation board.
A breather membrane is preferably fitted over the upper face of the slab and is secured, as by stapling to one or both of the side members.
Along the outer edge of each side member there may be formed a rounded groove into which is adapted to be fitted a vapour seal of circular cross-section, made for example of closed cell Neoprene. The cross section of the seal is chosen so that when two panels are abutted side by side, with a vapour seal received in opposed cooperating grooves, the seal will be compressed by about 20% and prevents the ingress or egress of moisture.
The invention also extends to an assembly of at least two abutted panels of which each adjacent pair of side members are held together by a channel-shaped metal bracket.
Preferably such a bracket extends partly over the slab of insulating material, and is secured to a support structure (eg a timber or steel frame) such as by fixing screws.
The brackets may be made of hot galvanised steel. Tiling battens may thus be directly secured across such an assembly as by nailing the battens to the side members through the metal fixing brackets.
The invention further extends to a method of forming such a building panel comprising the steps of forming a rectangular slab of insulating material, mounting a rigid side member along each longer edge of the slab with part of the section of the side member protruding beyond the upper face of the slab, fitting a shallow tray having upturned edges to the lower face of the slab, and securing the tray to the slab assembly.
The side member may be of timber and the tray of metal or plasters.
The tray may be secured to the lower face of the slab, or to the side members or both by adhesive or nails or screws or staples or the like.
The method may further comprise the step of securing a breather membrane on the upper face of the slab, and stapling the membrane to at least one of the side members.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view through a building panel constructed in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is a view also in section of an assembly of abutting panels, showing how the panels may be secured together to allow roof slates or tiles to be secured over the panels.
Detailed description of the drawings g In the building panel shown in Figure 1 a slab of thermal insulating material, such as mineral wool, is indicated generally at 12. The slab is of elongated rectangular shape and has a side member 14 of timber mounted along each of its longer edges. Each side member protrudes beyond the upper face of the slab to the extent of about 50 mm in height.
Against the lower face of the slab is fitted a shallow tray 16 made of steel or aluminium whose upturned side edges extend partly over the members 14. The sides of the tray are nailed or stapled to the member, preferably through pre-formed apertures (not shown) formed in the tray. The underside of the tray is decorated by a painted finish.
Over the upper face of the slab is laid a breather membrane 18 which extends over the protruding section of the members 14 to which it is fastened by stapling.
Along the side of each member there is formed a pre-cut groove 20 of rounded section into which is adapted to fit a length of vapour seal 22 of circular cross-section. The seal 22 is made of a closed cell Neoprene material, and its purpose is best explained with reference to Figure 2, which shows an assembly of such building panels side by side for use in a roof construction such as a Mansard type. Between adjacent grooves 22 of the side members 14 of the abutted panels is fitted a seal 22, compressed by about 20%.
A channel-shaped fixing bracket 24 is fitted over adjacent members 14 and has flanges 26 extending over the slabs 12.
The flanges are formed with spaced holes into which are fitted screws 28 passing through the slabs and into a supporting structure, which in this case are wooden roof purlins 30. The brackets 24 are also secured to the members 14 by nails 32.
Mounted across adjacent brackets 24 are tiling battens 34 secured by nails 35 through the brackets into the members 14; and secured in a conventional manner to the battens 34 are roof slates or tiles 36.
It will be apparent that the depth of section of the side members 14 may vary, dependent on the thickness of the slab 12 of insulating material; but in each case the member protrudes about 50 mm above the slab. This avoids the need for separate counter battens to be fixed to the panel, and also provides the necessary gap between the upper faces of the slabs and the tiling battens 34 fitted across the side members.
