Abstract

A board game is provided in which players throw a dice to enter a country such as Singapore, represented by the board, and then have to purchase an hotel room represented by an "HOTEL" card 14, and then purchase three "WINE & DINE" and/or "ENTERTAINMENT" and/or "DISCO" cards 16, three blue "SHOPPING" cards 18, three green "SIGHTSEEING" and/or "TOUR" cards 20 upon landing on squares of the appropriate colour and then exit the country. All the hotels and all the places to see and things to do, as represented by the cards, are really there in Singapore, and the cards are a form of advertisement of them, preferably including attractive illustrations. Yellow "COMMUNITY" cards 22 render the player liable to incidents which might really happen in Singapore, including infringements of the law. <IMAGE>

Description

BOARD GAME This invention relates to a board game for playing at visiting a real country or place.
It is an object of the invention to provide a board game which enables players to learn about a real country or place which they may, or may not. visit or have visited.
The invention provides a board game as claimed in each of the claims, to which reference is directed.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the drawings.
In the drawings: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of components of a board game forming a preferred embodiment of the invention; FIG. 2 is a plan view of a board which is one of the components shown in Fig. 1; FIG. 3 shows one face of an 11HOTEL" card; FIG. 4 shows the other face of the "HOTEL" card; and FIGS. 5, 6 and 7 show faces of three different cards, namely "SHOPPING", "TOUR" and "WINE & DINE", the other faces of each of these cards being plain.
Referring to the drawings, the illustrated board game is for plaving at visiting the real country Singapore. The game comprises the following components, shown in Fig. 1, namely:a board 10 (see also Fig. 2): S$10,000 "play-money" - as distinct from real money indicated by reference 12 in Fig.l, in Singapore dollar denominations of 50 x S$100, 60 x S$50, 60 x S$20, 80 x S$10; six "play-credit cards" (as distinct from real credit cards), not shown, each with a maximum cash limit of s$l,500, and each bearing the name and/or logo or trade mark of a real bank, credit card company or other financial institution operational in Singapore; six "play-travellersl cheques" (as distinct from real travellers' cheques), not shown, each with a value of S$500; a pack of twelve orange "HOTEL" cards 14 (one of which is shown in Figs. 3 and 4); a pack of twenty-four red "WINE & DINE" and "ENTERTAINMENT" and/or "DISCO" cards 16; a pack of twenty-four blue "SHOPPING" cards 18: a pack of twenty-four green "SIGHTSEEING" and/or "TOUR" cards 20; a pack of twenty-four yellow "COMMUNITY" cards 22; one dice 24; and six markers 26a to 26f (offering a choice for up to four players) in the form of models of a trishaw, a car, a boat, a bus, a rail carriage and a taxi, all of which are real forms of transport available in Singapore..
The board 10 is preferably rectangular, and along its four sides are a series of board-squares 28 in a closed circuit around the board 10 for the players' markers 26 (as in the well-known game nMonopoly"). At the four corners are four respective entry and exit squares 28a to 28d. One corner square 28a is an AIRPORT square, for entry "to Singapore". Another corner square 28b is a CAUSEWAY square, for exit "from Singapore".
Distributed among the squares 28 (other than the corner squares 28a-d) at random are some red, some blue, some green and some yellow squares. The board 10 has on it a map of Singapore, with which players become familiar as they play.
In the middle of the board 10 are four generally rectangular spaces, or "boxes", 30, 32, 34 and 36 which are coloured red, blue, green and yellow respectively for the red cards 16, the blue cards 18, the green cards 20 and the yellow cards 22 respectively. Prior to the start of a game, these cards are shuffled in their respective packs and placed, face down, on the respective spaces or boxes.
Each of the orange "HOTEL" cards 14 has on one side 14a (Fig. 3) a picture of a real hotel in Singapore.
This first side 14a of each card 14 may or may not reveal the name, but certainly does not reveal the price. The other side 14b (Fig. 4) reveals the name and the price.
Each of the twenty-four red "WINE & DINE" and "ENTERTAINMENT" or "DISCO" cards 16, each of the twenty-four blue "SHOPPING" cards 18, each of the twenty-four green "SIGHTSEEING" or "TOUR" cards 20 and each of the twenty-four yellow "COMMUNITY" cards 22 is plain on one side (that is, coloured plain red, blue, green or yellow as the case may be), whilst the other side bears information and a pretty picture where appropriate. The cards 16, 18 and 20 are preferably attractively printed, in order to advertise the real things in Singapore which the cards respectively relate to. This also applies to the cards 14 for the hotels.
The hotels represented (and illustrated by pictures) on cards 14 are real hotels in Singapore, such for example as the "Hilton" hotel.
Each of the twenty-four red "WINE & DINE" and "ENTERTAINMENT" or "DISCO" cards 16 represents a real restaurant, cafe, wine bar or the like in Singapore, and carries a picture of it, or of a dish of food, drink or the like associated with it. Some cards 16 may carry trade marks or logos, with the permission of the owners.
Each of the twenty-four blue "SHOPPING" cards 18 carries a picture of either a particular real shop or a particular real product to be shopped for in Singapore.
Some cards 18 may carry trade marks or logos, with the permission of the owners.
Each of the twenty-four green "SIGHTSEEING" or "TOUR" cards 20 carries a pretty picture of a particular real place to be visited in Singapore, such for example as the bird sanctuary, or the crocodile farm, or the orchid garden, or one or other famous building or location.
The twenty-four yellow "COMMUNITY" cards 22 represent happenings to which the visitor to Singapore really is liable. The following are listed as possible subjects for the 'COMMUNITY" cards 22:a) THIS IS A V.I.P. CARD. YOU CAN DO YOUR SHOPPING (VALUE UP TO S$75) WITH THIS V.I.P. The aim of the game is for each player to enter Singapore, to book in immediately at an hotel, to go on a trip of discovery, including sight-seeing, shopping, wining and dining, touring, etc. and then to exit Singapore.
In addition to entering Singapore and immediately buying an orange hotel card, therefore, a player is required, during the course of the game, to purchase three red cards (one at a time upon landing on a red square on the board), three blue cards (one at a time upon landing on a blue square on the board) and three green cards (one at a time upon landing on a green square on the board). Each card must be paid for at the time of purchase.
During the course of the game, if a player's marker 26 lands on a yellow square, he is required to take a yellow card from the top of the pack of yellow cards and either pay or receive the amount stated on the card, as the case may be. All such payments and receipts are to or from a "bank".
TO START - Each player starts the game with: 1. S$1000 money to spend on the trip (4 x $100, 6 x $50, 10 x $20, 10 x $10).
2. One Credit Card each which the player can cash anytime during the game for a maximum limit of $1,500.
3. One traveller's cheque which can be cashed at the bank at any time for a maximum value of S$500.
PAYMENTS 1. All payments during the game are made to the Bank.
2.Money won or awarded during the game is taken from the Bank.
3.All the Credit Cards and travellers' cheques are cashed at the Bank.
HOW TO START 1. Nominate a Player to be the Banker.
2. Each Player is then given $1000 money, one Credit Card and one traveller's cheque (see above).
3. Shuffle the packs of Red, Blue & Yellow Colour Cards according to their Colour and place them face down on the respective Colour spaces provided on the board.
4. Shuffle the Hotel Cards and place them under the control of the bank, with the picture faces showing and the prices concealed.
5. To determine positions, throw the dice 24, highest number going first. If two or more players get the same high number1 they then throw against each other until one gets the higher number. The others play clockwise from this first player.
6. A player must get a SIX to start and lands at the AIRPORT square 28a. He then has to make a reservation for a room at any Hotel and to pay for the Hotel room.
The player selects any Hotel Card (price unseen) and rents it by paying the value stated on the reverse of that card.
7. He then throws again to move to his next position on the board. A Six does not afterwards entitle the Player to have a second throw or to go again.
8. A player landing on any Colour square takes the top Card off the pile of the same Colour. Cards should be shuffled before each game.
9. Every time a Player passes the AIRPORT Square, he has to pay for his/her Hotel room. The player can opt to retain the Hotel Card held previously or he/she can go for another Hotel. The Old Hotel card is then returned back to the Bank.
10. Players go on until the game is complete and they have experienced: a) Entertainment at 3 Restaurants/Entertainments.
b) Shopping bargains at 3 Stores (and/or products or brand names).
c) Sight-seeing at 3 places of interest.
In other words, the player who has collected the required 3 Red Cards, 3 Blue Cards and 3 Green Cards, has completed his/her trip and now has to proceed to exit the Game. Players can, however, collect more than 3 Cards of each.
11. Players now proceed to the nearest EXIT and need to land exactly on the exit square. If the player gets a higher number than required on his/her dice, he/she has to go backwards from the EXIT square. (An alternative rule would be for the player to pass the exit square.) A smaller number brings him closer to the EXIT square.
12. During the game a player may land on a Yellow square and on taking the top Card from the pile finds he has to leave "Singapore". In this event, the player must go directly to the EXIT square mentioned and miss the number of turns or pay the penalty before he/she can re-enter and continue the game.
13. Only the Yellow cards are placed back at the bottom of the pile after reading them. The other, Blue, Red and Green, Cards are kept by the players to complete the game For adapting the game to other countries than Singapore, it might be preferred to have "Resort" cards instead of the "Hotel" cards.
It will be appreciated that the "WINE & DINE" cards, the "ENTERTAINMENT8 cards, the "SHOPPING" cards and the "SIGHTSEEING" or "TOUR" cards overlap to some extent as regards satisfying the requirement of the invention to provide a set of "sight-seeing" or "activity" or "recreation" cards.
Play "Traveller's Cheques", not shown, may be provided if desired, bearing the name and/or logo or trade mark of a real bank or other financial institution operating in Singapore.
It is envisaged that any enterprise in Singapore depicted in the game will have gladly consented to this, as providing publicity for the enterprise. Indeed, the enterprise may even pay for such publicity.
It will be appreciated that the game may not always be updated if laws of the real country or place are changed after the game has reached the stage of manufacture. For example, maximum fines may change, laws may be amended or even repealed, new laws may be introduced, and so forth. However, the game may be made available in "Editions", each updated, and conversion packs may be made available for updating an old Edition.
