Abstract
A tyre includes a tyre body 10 having a ground engageable wall 11 and two opposite side walls 12 extending from the ground engageable wall to be matched against an annular tyre frame 20, and a layer 30 of glutinous elastic material applied to the inner surface of the tyre body for being capable of immediately molecule-cohering if the tyre is pierced by a nail so as substantially to prevent the tyre from leaking air. The elastic material suitably comprises a highly plasticised resin composition. <IMAGE>
Description
A TYRE The present invention relates to a tyre, and more particularly to a
tyre permitting continuing usage after pierced by a nail.
A conventional air-filled tyre used for a motorcycle or a car will leak the contained air through the pierced hole if pierced by a nail or the like to thus make the motorcycle or the car inoperative or inadequate for being driven if it does not have a spare tyre or if the pierced tyre is not replaced. In order to overcome this disadvantage, it has been pro-posed that the ground engageable wall of the tyre should be embedded with kinds of reinforcing layers or that the tyre be divided into independent air-chambers. The former, however, can only reduce the opportunity of getting a pierced tyre and slow down the air leakage rate of the pierced tyre,- still leaving the motorcycle or the car suffering from the above disadvantage. The latter at least envisages the problems of high cost and uneven wear.
Xt is therefore an object of 'the present invention to provide a tyre which will leak only a very small amount of air if pierced by a nail or the like.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a tyre which will leak only a further very small amount of air up6n removing the nail from the tyre without the need to get the tyre repaired.
According to the present invention, a tyre includes a tyre body adapted to be matched against a tyre frame and a layer of glutinous elastic material applied to the inner surface of the tyre body for being capable of immediately molecule-cohering if the tyre is pierced by a nail so as substantially to prevent the tyre from leaking air.
The present invention may best be understood through the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing a'preferred' embodiment of a tyre according to the present invention; Figure 2A is a schematic view showing the tyre of Figure 1 initially pierced by a nail; is Figure 2B is a schematic view showing the tyre of Figure 1 shortly after having been pierced by a nail; Figure 2C is a 'schematic view showing the tyre of Figure 2B as a nail is pulled therefrom; and Figure 2D is a schematic view showing the state of a pierced tyre after the pierciilg nail has been removed therefrom.
Referring now to Figure 1, a tyre according to the present invention includes a tyre body having an annular ground engageable wall 11 having a tyre tread 13 and two opposite side walls 12 integrally and generally laterally extending from two opposite sides of ground engageable wall 11 to terminate as two tyre lips 15 capable of being matched against two opposite sides 21 of an annular tyre frame 20 when the tyre is airf illed, and a layer of glutinous elastic material 30 applied to the inner surface of the tyre body 10 and being thicker at the ground engageable wall 11 than at 5 the side walls 12.
The glutinous elastic layer 30 has the following characteristics:
1. It has a good adhesiveness so that it can be applied upon the inner surface of tyre body 10 without an adhesive.
2. It has an excellent elasticity sio that it can accommodate itself to the deformation of tyre body 10 in a moving car and will not deteriorate the roadability of the car.
3. It can endure a high temperature up to about 100C so that the frictional heat generated by the tyre of a high speed car cannot disengage it from tyre body 10.
4. It has a good anti-oxidizability so that it will not age to be inoperative during.:the lifetime of tyre body.10. 5. It has a strong molecular cohesion so that tyre body 10 can achieve the functions to be described hereinafter. 25 As shown in Figure 2A, when a nail 40 pierces into wall 11 and layer 30, the tyre'will initially leak the air through the pierced hole 41 but within about 1 second, as shown in Figure 2B. the molecules of layer 30 around pierced hole 41 will immediately cohere together and tightly match around nail 40 with the assistance of the high pressure air in the tyre to block the tyre air from leaking further through pierced hole 41 which now has a peripheral clearance only in the ground engageable wall.
Upon pulling the nail 40 from the tyre,, as shown in Figure 2C, the tyre air will again initially leak through pierced hole 41 but within one or two seconds, as shown in Figure 2D, the molecules of layer 30 around pierced hole 41 will rapidly cohere'and match together to only leave a seam replacing the original layer hole 41 so that the tyre air is blocked from leaking through pierced hole 41 and so that the tyre does not need to be repaired except it may be desired to be somewhat pressurised.
The layer of glutinous elastic material 30 may be prepared by stirring and heating the constituents of a plasticiser of 77-97% by weight, a resin of 3-15% by weight. a thixotropic thickening agent of 0-2% by weight, a-,, stabiliser of 0-2% by weight, a stabiliser enhancer of 0-2% by weight and a surfactant of 0-2 by weight. As an example. by weight. the plasticiser being DUP (or DOP or DINP) occupies 84-93%, the resin being PVC 6-12%, the thixotropic thickening agent being Si02 0.4-1.6%, the stabiliser 'being Zinc tin stabiliser 0-0.3%, the stabiliser enhancer being Soyoil 0-0.3%, and the surfactant being Surfysol 104A occupies i"-, k Ii 0.1-0.5% Through the above description, it should now become rapidly apparent how and why the present invention can achieve the objects it contemplates.
4 claims A tyre comprising:
