Abstract

223,633. Coward, W. M. July 16, 1923. Rotary valves; toothed gears ; expansion, varying.-Single and multiple-cylinder engines have cylindrical valve-chests in which are arranged coaxial rotatable valves for distributing the fluid, reversing, and varying the cut-off. In an arrangement for a compound engine, the inner valve 1, Fig. 2, rotated by screw and bevel gearing from the main shaft, is tapered and divided into compartments 5, 6 with peripheral ports 7 - - 11, and is surrounded by a peripherally-ported reversing-valve 13, Fig. 3, which is surrounded at one end by an angular-adjustable sleeve 30, Fig. 4. The reversing-valve has movable upwardlyprojecting blocks 20, 21 which enter ports 28, 29 of the sleeve 30. The valves 13, 30 have handles 15, 32, Fig. 7. The handle 32 may be controlled by a governor. The rotary valve 12 is held to its seat by a spring 39 adjusted by a screw held in the cover 35. Steam passes from the inlet, 58 through ports 59, 27, 16 and 7 into chamber 5. Upon either port 8 or 9 opening, the steam passes through ports 17, 28, 42 and passage 45, or ports 18, 29. 43 and passage 46 to the highpressure cylinder. The piston towards the end of its stroke uncovers ports 61 and the exhaust passes to a receiver 63 and thence through ports 64 in the valve-casing 34 and ports 22 and 10 in the reversing valve and distributing-valve respectively to the low-pressure valve chamber G and then through ports 11, 23 or 24, 47 or ports 12, 24 or 25, 48 to the low-pressure cylinder. A single cylinder engine is described wherein the exhaust steam passes from the cylinder supply passages through by-pass passage to ports in the valve casing controlled by the valve. The reversing-valve is dispensed with in non-reversible engines. The valve 1 may have the configuration of a tractrix curve, or may be provided with a conical surface having two parts of different inclination. Specification 17151/08 is referred to.
