Abstract

Opening by cutting. - A tin-opener has the fore-end bifurcated comprising a blade A<1>, Fig. 4, having three bevelled edges formed of parabolic or like curvature, and affording a piercer point A<5>, and an upwardly-cranked hook member A<6>, the downwardly-turned free end A<7>, Fig. 3, of which has one corner A' rounded and the other A<8> shaped to a thin edge or notched, as shown. The opener is placed with the end A<7> over the beaded rim of a tin B to be opened and is moved as shown by the arrow, causing the point A<5> to make a horizontal cut in the wall, below the beading; continuation of this movement causes the hook to ride over the rim so that the notched edge A<8> engages the outer side of the bead B<1>, as shown in Fig. 5, and becomes the new fulcrum point. The process is repeated with an advance around the rim in the appropriate direction until the cut is completed. Fig. 7 shows a form in which an additional hook-ended part E is provided, the inner edge E<1>, Fig. 8, of which serves as the second fulcrum in the same way as the edge A<8> in the other form.
