Abstract
A security device has a pointed end (14) which can be driven into the tops of perimeter walls or other appropriate locations so that a spiked end (12) presents a deterrent to intruders. The device is formed with a shoulder (16) intermediate its two ends so that a recessed driver (20) can be applied to transmit the impact of a hammer when installing the device. After the driver has been removed the security device will remain firmly in place without the need for any ancilliary anchoring devices. <IMAGE>
Description
Security Device
This invention relates to a security device for providing deterrence to intruders onto private or other property.
It has been known in the past to use broken glass embedded in the tops of perimeter walls, or to use barbed wire in order to deter intruders. An improved device which has also been used is spiked ironwork and this is less unsightly than the broken glass or barbed wire, but is costly.
I have now devised a security device which can be fitted to the tops of perimeter walls or other appropriate locations, which device is of simple and relatively inexpensive structure and can be installed easily without the need for any ancilliary anchoring devices yet will prove effective without being unduly unsightly.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a security device which comprises an elongate element having one end which is spiked and its opposite end pointed and capable of being driven into masonry or mortar by impact.
A preferred embodiment cf the security device is formed with a shoulder intermediate its two ends, for use in driving the pointed end into masonry or mortar by impact.
Preferably a driver is provided, which has a recess for accommodating the spike end as it is fitted against the shoulder, so that the driver can then be struck with a hammer to drive the pointed end of the security device into masonry or mortar or other penetrable surfaces.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view of a security device in accordance with this invention, shown with a driver for driving the pointed end of the device into masonry or mortar, and
FIGURE 2 is a view to show typically uses of the security device.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a security device which comprises an elongate element 10 having one end 12 which is spiked and an opposite end 14 which is pointed and capable of being driven into masonry or mortar by impact. The spiked end 12 is of conical shape. The pointed end 14 comprises a round shank with a pointed end in the manner of a nail and is of hardened metal (preferably steel) such that it can be driven into masonry or mortar.
The device which is shown comprises an annular shoulder 16, from which the spiked end 12 and pointed end- 14 project.
A driver 20 is provided, comprising a round shank having a flat head 22. A bore 24 is formed into the end of the shank to receive the spiked end 12 of the security device, and this bore 24 is enlarged at its end 26 to receive the annular shoulder 15 of the security device.
In use, the driver 20 is applied over the security device so that the spiked end 12 of the device is receive within the bore or recess 24 of the driver and the shoulder 16 of the device is received within the-enlarged end 26 of this bore, with a shoulder 25 of the driver against the shoulder 16 of the device. The security device is then driven into masonry or mortar by striking the head of the driver with a hammer.
Preferably a number of the security devices are provided in a kit together with a driver.
Figure 2 shows examples of locations in which the security devices may be installed, particularly on the tops of perimeter walls for example into the mortar between bricks etc, or into the tops of wooden gates or gate posts etc.
Claims (4)
1 A security device which comprises an elongate element having one end which is spiked and its opposite end pointed and capable of being driven into masonry or mortar or other penetrable surfaces by impact.
2 A security device as claimed in Claim 1 wherin the device is formed with a shoulder intermediate its two ends, for use in driving the pointed end into masonry or mortar or other penetrable surfaces by impact.
3 A security device as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherin the shoulder is capable of receiving a recessed driver which can be struck with a hammer to drive the pointed end of the security device into masonry or mortar or other penetrable surfaces.
4 A security device substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing.
