Abstract
A multihull boardsail has two or more boardsailing boards releasably joined in parallel at an appropriate distance apart. A raised platform 1 is releasably attached to the supporting boards by means of front adjustable fittings 7 which locate in the supporting boards' mastfoot receptors together with rear adjustable fittings 8 which accept and locate each supporting boards' keel whilst permitting the keels virtual normal operation on the boardsailing board. This stable platform 1 accommodates footing 5 to accept traditional boardsailing mast fittings together with mounting 6 for optional attachment of an outboard motor. Slots 9 may be provided to allow for the introduction of each keel to the rear adjustable fitting 8 and to permit vertical adjustment of each keel in use. <IMAGE>
Description
MULTIHULL BOARDSAIL
This invention relates to a multihull boardsail.
Additional provision is made for optional motor propulsion.
Boardsails are well known recreational and sporting craft.
They are single hulled and require considerable physical skills on the part of the sailor. Developing these skills is complicated by the requirement to balance on the craft whilst attempting sailing operations. As sailing skills are learned and applied the craft effectively becomes more stable.
Enjoyment of boardsailing is relatively limited to people who can withstand the learning process and accept falls as an integral part of the activity.
Alternative use of the boards is limited to paddling them with, or without, the aid of seats/back supports or towing them with other craft.
According to the present invention there is provided a stable platform supported by two (or more) boardsailing boards and accommodating a single footing for accepting traditional boardsailing mast fittings, also a rear mounting for optional attachment of an outboard motor. The invention is so designed as to permit rapid mounting/demounting to boardsailing boards by means of front adjustable fittings which locate in the supporting boards' mastfoot receptors together with adjustable fittings which accept and locate each supporting boards' keel whilst permitting the keels virtual normal operation on the boardsailing boards.
The invention locates the boards parallel and at an appropriate distance apart and provides for the raising of the platform to achieve clearance for the passage of water between the boards.
The invention permits two (or more if appropriately extended) boardsailing boards to be operated in a multihull configuration from a stable platform whilst retaining virtual normal sailing characteristics. It also provides for the optional attachment of outboard motor provision to provide alternative propulsion.
The invention affords the opportunity to operate the multihull craft with more than one person on board, thus facilitating its use for instruction of boardsailing and/or wider recreational use by people who would not normally participate.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which;- Figure 1 shows in perspective, the platform with fittings for providing attachment to boardsailing boards, footing to provide boardsailing mast attachment (and thereby boom and sail provision) and mounting for outboard motor attachment.
Referring to the drawing the platform 1 is supported and raised above the boardsail boards by upstands 2 which are stabilised by cross members 3 which are formed to allow for clearance 4 between the platform and the water.
A footing 5 is provided to permit the location of traditional boardsailing mast fittings.
A mounting 6 may be provided for the optional fitting of outboard motor propulsion.
Front adjustable fittings 7 provides location in the boardsail boards'mastfoot receptors.
Rear adjustable fittings 8 accept and retain each supporting boards' keel. The fittings are positioned so as to allow that portion of the keel not retained by the fittings to pass through the keel slot of each supporting board. The fittings may allow for vertical adjustment of each keel.
Slots 9 may be required to allow introduction of each keel to the rear adjustable fitting 8 and to permit vertical adjustment of each keel in use.
