DESCRIPTION
Title: Welding machine suitable for seam-like joining of synthetic material foils or coated fabric.
The invention relates to a welding machine 5 suitable for seam-like joining of synthetic material foils or coated fabric.
Synthetic material welding machines, and here in particular ultrasound welding machines. are conventionally designed as single-purpose machines. The DE-AS 21 48 861 is an example thereof in that ultrasound welding machines are in fact only suitable for their intended application. Since the anvil, constructed to be a driven feed wheel co-acting with the sonotrode, can only execute its feed function with an abutment mount present above the welding material, and this function is also executed in conjunction with the sonotrode, the already known ultrasound welding machine can only be modified at considerable expense into a different machine type, for example into a heated-air or heated- wedge welding machine, in which respect the function of the abutment mount for the feed means has to be replaced by a separate construction element.
It is the object of the invention to construct a synthetic material welding machine so that it can be 1 1 2 be used for different types of welding work without great effort.
According to this invention there is provided a welding machine suitable for seam-like joining of synthetic material foils or coated fabric, comprising at least a housing, a welding unit with displaceably arranged welding tool, a device for producing heat for welding, and an abutment and feed mechanism, comprising an upper and a lower pressure roller, wherein the housing and the abutment and feed mechanism constitute a basic machine which is alternatively equipable with welding units of different welding heat sources and/or different output.
By dividing the welding machine into a basic machine and an exchangeable welding unit, the basic machine can be set up with little effort as an ultrasound, heated, air or heated wedge welding machine, and additionally with different output stages and, due to the exchangeability of the welding units, and it can remodified easily and repeatedly. Easy exchangeability is achieved, in particular with the ultrasound welding unit in mind, in that the welding pressure and the feed speed are always effected by a pair of pressure rollers and that in an ultrasound welding unit the sonotrode only serves the transfer of energy onto the welding material, but not as an abutment 1 3 surface for the feed means as well.
The housing preferably includes at least two alternatively usable mounting surfaces for the attachment of the welding units. In a preferred embodiment a C-shaped housing has a first mounting surface on a side face and a second mounting surface on the front side of the housing head.
Preferably the welding machine of the invention has a support for the welding tool, the support being adjustable for angular adjustment of the welding tool. Preferably the support has two plates which are hinged to one another, and a support rod which is adjustable and secures their angular position. Preferably also one of the plates, which supports the welding tool, is adjustable in the axial direction of the hinge axis relative to the other plate.
When the welding tool comprises a sonotrode of an ultrasound welding head, displaceable in the axial direction between an inoperative and an operative position, preferably provision is made for a transversely adjustable wedge member to allow true distance setting of the working position, which wedge member defines the setting range of the ultrasound welding head, serves as a stop, and which is finely adjustable, such as by means of a micrometer screw.
The invention will now be further described, by l 4 way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a view of a basic machine without welding unit; Figure 2 is a view of a basic machine, equipped with an ultrasound welding unit; Figure 3 is a view of a basic machine, equipped with a heated air welding unit; Figure 4 is a view of the ultrasound welding unit; Figure 5 is a side view of the ultrasound welding unit; and Figure 6 is a partially cross-sectional illustration of a hinge of the support of the ultrasound welding unit.
Referring to the accompanying drawings a housing 1 of basic machine 2 consists of a base plate 3 which supports a column 4, a stand 5 and an arm 6 which terminates in a head 7.
An upper driven pressure roller 9 is arranged on a support 8 which is accommodated on head 7, and a lower driven pressure roller 10 is arranged on column 4.
Support a and pressure rollers 9, 10 together with a lifting and lowering device (not shown), associated with upper pressure roller 9, constitute an abutment and feed mechanism 11.

For the alternative equipment of basic machine 2 with different welding units, both the front surface and the end surface of head 7 are arranged to be suitably constructed mounting surfaces 12 or 13 respectively.
According to Figure 2, mounting surface 12, located at the front surface of head 7, serves for the attachment of an ultrasound welding unit 14, which unit 10 is shown in more detail in Figures 4 to 6.
According to Figure 3, mounting surface 13, located at the face of head 7, serves for the attachment of an already known, therefore not further described heated air welding unit 15.

Ultrasound welding unit 14 includes a support 16, composed of two plates 17, 18, which are hinged one to another, and an L-shaped support rod 19 which secures welding unit Furthermore, a heated-wedge can be arranged on mounting their angular position.
Plate 17 is height adjustable and bolted to mounting surface 12. onto plate 18 is attached a Ushaped frame 23, consisting of two shank plates 20, 21 and a connecting plate 22. The aforementioned support rod 19 is arranged to be pivotable in an extension 24 of plate 17 and displaceable in block 25 which is rotatable 6 in the upper shank plate 20, and secured by means of a bolt 26 in block 25.
Between the two shank plates 20, 21 are attached two guide rods 27 onto which is displaceably arranged a support plate 28 which has on one side a wedge-shaped transverse end 29. on the upper shank plate 20 is arranged a pneumatic cylinder 30, the piston rod 31 of which is firmly linked to the displaceable support plate 28.
Onto support plate 28 is mounted an already known oscillating ultrasound welding head 32 including a fingershaped sonotrode 33, as illustrated in Figure 2.
As shown in Figure 6, the two plates 17, 18 of support 16 are hinged to one another by two screws 34, is 35 serving as hinge pins. After loosening screws 34, 35 and 26, frame 23 including ultrasound welding head 32 can be angularly adjusted so that sonotrode 33 co-acts suitably with lower pressure roller 10, which in this case serves as anvil. After angular adjustment, screws 20 26,"j4 and 35 are tightened again, thereby securing the angular position of frame 23. As is further shown in Figure 6, plate 18 engages into a recess 36 of plate 17, in which respect recess 36 is a few millimeters broader than plate 18. Thus, plate 18 can be displaced by respective turning of screws 34, 35 within recess 36, and sonotrode 33 can be centred 1 7 relative to lower pressure roller 10.
On lower shank plate 21 below the wedgeshaped transverse end 29 of support plate 28 is arranged a wedge member 37, displaceable across the movement path thereof, which co-acts with the transverse end 29 and defines the movement or setting range of support plate 28 and thus the working position of ultrasound welding head 32. Wedge member 37 is linked to a micrometer screw 38, as known in metrology. Fine adjustments are made by way of said micrometer screw 38 so that the movement range of sonotrode 33 can be set very precisely relative to the lower pressure roller 10.

Claims (1)

  1. 8 CLAIMS an upper A welding machine suitable for seam-like joining of
    synthetic material foils or coated fabric, comprising at least a housing, a welding unit with displaceably arranged welding tool, a device for producing heat for welding, and an abutment and feed mechanism, comprising and a lower pressure roller, wherein the housing and the abutment and feed mechanism constitute a basic machine which is alternatively equipable with welding units of different welding heat sources and/or different output.
    2. A welding machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the housing includes at least two alternatively usable mounting surfaces for the attachment of the welding units.
    3. A welding machine as claimed in claim 2, wherein a C-shaped housing has a first mounting surface on a side face and a second moufting surface on the front side of the housing head.
    4. A welding machine as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, having a support for the welding tool, the support being adjustable for angular adjustment of the welding tool.
    5. A welding machine as claimed in claim 4, wherein the support has two plates which are hinged to one another, and a support rod which is adjustable and 4 1 9 secures their angular position.
    6. A welding machine as claimed in claim 5, wherein one of the plates, which supports the welding tool, is adjustable in the axial direction of the hinge axis relative to the other plate.
    7. A welding machine as claimed in claim 5 or 6, wherein the welding tool comprises a sonotrode of an ultrasound welding head, displaceable in the axial direction between an inoperative and an operative position, wherein provision is made for a transversely adjustable wedge member to allow true distance setting of the working position, which wedge member defines the setting range of the ultrasound welding head, serves as a stop, and which is finely adjustable.
    8. A welding machine substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
