Abstract
A display apparatus comprises a transparent panel 10 which includes liquid crystal display elements for displaying a message, and a controller 20 having a keyboard on which at least one message can be programmed into a memory for driving the display when required. The panel 10 may be adhered to the rear window of a car for example or to the window of a shop etc. <IMAGE>
Description
Display Apparatus
This invention relates to a display apparatus which may for example be fitted in the rear window of a car or other vehicle or in the window of a shop.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a display apparatus which comprises a transparent panel which includes electrodes to which signals can be applied to provide visible patterns of selected shape or shapes, and a programmable control means for applying signals to the electrodes to generate selected visible patterns.
Preferably the patterns comprise alphanumeric characters, so that the apparatus is arranged to display selected messages or notices. For example if the apparatus is to be fitted in the rear window of a car or other vehicle, the message might read "Please keep your distance" or "Child on board", for example.
The transparent display panel may be adhered to the window of a car or window of a shop etc and may be provided with a self-adhesive backing for this purpose. Alternatively, the panel may be formed integrally within a vehicle rear window or similarly integrally within a glass pane forming a window for a shop etc.
The display panel may comprise a liquid crystal display, which is normally transparent and of which the electrodes are transparent.
The control means preferably comprises a keyboard on which one or more messages can be programmed into a memory of the control means. The display may remain transparent and without any displayed message until the user actuates a switch or pushbutton to produce a display of the message from the memory, e.g. the switch or push-button being on the dashboard in the case of a car. If the display apparatus is programmed with a plurality of different messages, then a selected switch arrangement is provided to enable the user to select the message he wishes to display at each instant. Alternatively, and especially for use in displaying adverising or other information in a shop window for example, the apparatus may display a plurality of programmed messages in sequence.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, the single figure of which is a schematic and diagrammatic view of a display apparatus in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a display apparatus which comprises a flat, rectangular and normally transparent display panel 10 which comprises a number of seven-segment liquid crystal displays so that the panel may display an alpha-numeric message or notice of up to the same number of characters. The electrodes of the display are transparent. The display panel is provided with a self adhesive backing and is flexible.
The apparatus further comprises a controller 20 which comprises an alpha-numeric and function keyboard. On this keyboard, the user may program the controller with one or more messages for display on the panel 10, which message or messages are programmed into an elecronic memory of the controller.
The display panel 10 may be self-adhered flat against e.g. the rear window of a car or the window of a shop etc. Instead as mentioned above, the panel may be formed integrally within the vehicle window or a glass window pane for a shop etc.
When a switch of the controller is actuated by the user, a programmed message is displayed on the display panel, appropriate signals being sent from the controller to the electrodes of the display- panel 10 to activate the liquid crystal elements.
It will be appreciated that because the display panel is transparent, it will be normally be unoticed when fitted to a transparent window. But when required the apparatus can be actuated to cause the characters to become visible in the display panel.
Claims (7)
1) A display apparatus which comprises a transparent panel which includes electrodes to which signals can be applied to provide visible patterns of selected shape or shapes, and a programmable control means for applying signals to the electrodes to generate selected visible patterns.
2) A display apparatus as claimed in claims 1 in which the electrodes are arranged for the display to provide alpha-numeric characters.
3) A display apparatus as claimed in claim 2, in which the control means comprises a keyboard with alpha-numeric keys for programming at least one message into a memory of the control means.
4) A display apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the display panel is provided with a selfadhesive backing.
5) A display apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the display panel is in the form of a flexible sheet.
6) A display apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the display panel is integrally formed within a glass pane.
7) A display apparatus substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
