Abstract
A removable handle for an article having a base and upstanding edge, such as a grill pan 5 consists of a support 2 mounted on the handle 1 and a grip 3 which is spring-biassed so that one of its limbs 3a is urged away from the arm 1 and the other of its limbs 3b is urged against the pan outside wall edge, so that the pan is held between the part 3b of the grip and the part 2b of the support engaging the inside face of the pan side wall, while the base is supported by part 2a extending therebelow. <IMAGE>
Description
Removable Handle for An Article
Such As A Pan
This invention relates to removable handles for articles having a base and an edge which is upstanding relative to the base.
The invention provides a removable handle for an article having a base and an edge which is upstanding relative to the base1 comprising a support mounted on a handle and fixed relative to the handle, the support having a part for extending under the base of the article and a part for retaining the inner face of the edge of the article, and a grip movable relative to the handle for engaging the outer face of the edge thereby securely to retain the article relative to the handle.
The grip is moved relative to the handle to release the article. The article could be a pan for cooking, such as a grill pan or a meat roasting dish, but could equally be a pan or other kind of support for medical, scientific or for any other purpose.
A removable handle for a grill pan constructed in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a removable handle
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the handle from the side, but on a smaller scale than that shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the handle attached to a pan on the same scale and from the same viewpoint as for Figure 2.
The removable handle comprises a flat arm 1, an end la of which is bent around to form a rigid mount for a support 2, and relative to which a grip 3 is movable.
The flat arm 1 has an aperture 4 to enable a longer handle to be attached to the arm. Only a portion of the grill pan 5 is shown in Figure 3, and it will be seen that the grill pan has a base 5a and an upstanding edge 5b relative to the base, together with a horizontal rim 5c which is turned over at the outer edge.
The support 2, which is made out of a metal rod bent into the shape shown (or a metal pressing), has a part 2a for extending underneath a part of the grill pan 5 in order to support it and a part 2b for retaining the inner face of an edge of the pan Sb.
The grip 3 consists of a longitudinally-extending plate which is bent about a tranverse axis to form a finger-piece 3a and a gripping portion 3b having projecting lugs 3c and 3d. A retaining rod 6 has rivets 7 extending through it, the heads of which are larger than slots 8 in the arm 1, la, and this secures the grip 3 to the arm 1, while allowing limited pivotal movement about the axis of the rod 6. The gripping portion of the arm 3b is urged against the mounting part of la of the arm 1 by means of a projection 9 extending from a leaf spring 10 which is secured to the-underside of the arm 1.
When it is desired to attach the handle to the pan 5, the portion 3a of the grip 3, which forms a finger-piece, is depressed against the leaf spring 10 and the gripping portion 3b pivots away from the support 2. The support is then manipulated over the edge of the pan 5, so that the portion 2a is beneath the base of the pan and the portion 2b is inside the inner face of the edge. The fingerpiece 3a is then released and the grip is pivoted forwards towards the pan until the lugs 3c engage the outer face of the edge of the pan, in this case engaging the turned down portion of the rim Sc. Lug 3d locates beneath the turned down portions of the rim Sc. The result is that the pan is slid relative to the support until the retaining part 2b is in engagement with the inner face 5b of the pan, while the lugs 3care spring-biassed against the outer face of the edge 5b.The result of lug 3d located beneath rim of Sc is that the handle cannot be rotated free of the pan until the finger piece 3a is pressed down. The pan is thus securely held. The pan can be released simply by pressing the finger-piece 3a down until it touches the flat arm 1 and uncoupling the support from the pan.
The parts 1 and 3 may be moulded from plastics material, but the leaf spring may be of metal.
The handle is particularly suitable for attachment to pans having an upper horizontal rim Sc which has the same spacing from the base 5a of the pan as does the base of the support have from the horizontal uppermost part 2c of the support.
Variations may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. Thus, the handle is suitable for all sorts of cooking pans, so long as they have a base and an upstanding edge. The invention is also applicable to any kind of article having a base and an upstanding edge, and could be used for example for transferring a dish to and from an oven, or for any other scientific or medical purposes. The grip 3 is shown as being mounted on the arm 1, but it could be mounted on the support 2 instead if desired.
Claims (7)
1. A removable handle for an article having a base and an edge which is upstanding relative to the base, comprising a support mounted on a handle and fixed relative to the handle, the support having a part for extending under the base of the article and a part for retaining the inner side of the edge of the article, and a grip movable relative to the handle for engaging the outer side of the edge thereby securely to retain the article relative to the handle.
2. A removable handle as claimed in claim 1, including a grip which is spring-biassed towards the outer side of the edge.
3. A removable handle as claimed in claim 2, in which the handle has a flat portion adjacent to the support, the grip having a flat finger-piece arranged to be pressed against the flat portion of the handle in order to release the article.
4. A removable handle as claimed in claim 3, including a leaf spring which acts to bias the flat finger-piece away from the flat portion of the handle in order to grip the article.
5. A removable handle for an article having a base and an edge which is upstanding relative to the base, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
6. An article having a base and an edge which is upstanding relative to the base in combination with a removable handle as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5.
7. An article as claimed in claim 6, in which the article is a pan for cooking.
