Description
:;->:2 3 3- cD cD 7 A motor accessory with signalling boards for
requesting assistance.
The present invention relates to a motor accessory with signalling boards for requesting assistance.
As is well known, if a motor vehicle stops accidentally, _or at any rate unintentionally, for example, because of mechanical breakdown, the illness of the driver or a lack of fuel, it is particularly important to be able to signal to third parties both a request for assistance and the reason for stopping.
In fact, it is well known that, in the absence of the usual posts with emergency call devices which are available only on the busiest roads and motorways, it may be necessary to wait for a very long time before receiving any assistance.
The motor accessories provided by the prior art for coping with such an inconvenient occurrence are usually lacking from the point of view of their practicality and speed of use by the user, as well as of the clarity of the message to any helper.
Other disadvantages are the fact that the accessories according to the prior art do not lend themselves to being connected removably to the motor vehicle or to fulfilling their signalling function dependably.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a motor accessory of the type indicated above which has structural and functional characteristics such that it can signal clearly and effectively to third parties both a request for assistance and the reason for the 2 request, and which at the same time is quick and easy to use and compact in its inoperative condition.
This object is achieved by a motor accessory for requesting assistance, characterised in that it comprises:
- a foldable support constituted by a blanked body formed essentially as a planar development of a trihedron and having fold lines defining two side faces and a bearing face constituted by two adjacent portions which can be folded substantially like a bellows between the side faces, - means provided on the said portions for fixing the blanked body removably to a motor vehicle, and - at least one signalling board which bears a symbol relating to the reason for the call for assistance and has releasable engagement means for its attachment to one of the side faces.
In a preferred embodiment, the side faces already bear distress signals and the fixing means comprise magnetic plates mounted on the adjacent portions of the bearing face of the support. Moreover, the releasable engagement means for the boards are essentially of the peg-and-slot type.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of - a motor accessory according to one embodiment of the present invention, arranged on the roof of a motor vehicle; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the accessory of 3 Figure 1 with some parts detached, on an enlarged scale; Figure 3 is a further perspective view of the accessory of Figure 1 in a partially-open condition, and Figure 4 is a perspective view of an envelope or case in which the accessory of Figure 1 can be packed.
With reference to the drawings, a motor accessory for requesting assistance and simultaneously indicating the reason for the request is generally indicated 1 and is intended for use in the event of an accidental or unintentional stoppage of a motor vehicle 12.
The accessory 1 comprises a folding polypropylene support 2 constituted by a blanked body which is formed essentially as a planar development of a trihedron and in which three parallel fold lines 2a, 2b and 2c are formed.
The fold lines define two side faces 3 and 4 and a bearing face 5 which can be folded like a bellows between the side faces 3 and 4. More particularly, the bearing face 5 is constituted by two portions Sa and 5b which are adjacent each other when the support is in use. Respective magnetic plates 6 are mounted on these portions for fixing the support 2 removably to the roof 14 of the motor vehicle 12 in use.
This fixing system ensures the - stability of the accessory 1 even under the action of a static load of not less than 2 daN, simulating an aerodynamic effect.
The support 2 can thus assume an open, operative 4 condition, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, in which the side faces 3 and 4 diverge by an angle preferably of between 10 0 and 60 0 1 or a closed, inoperative condition, as shown in Figure 4, in which the bearing face 5 is folded like a bellows with the portions Sa and 5b superposed and held together by the respective magnetic plates 6.
To advantage, a slot 13a, 13b is formed in the centre of each portion 5a, 5b and forms a handle for the carrying of the support 2 by hand.
It should be noted that, in the closed, inoperative condition, a space 9 is defined between the side faces 3 and 4 of the support 2 for housing a plurality of interchangeable signalling boards 10 for mounting on the side face 4, as will become clear from the description below.
An "SOS" distress signal is visible on the outer surface of the side face 3 and extends horizontally over practically its entire surface. This signal is written in black capital letters of a prescribed height on a yellow background in order to achieve a suitable colour contrast.
An "SOS" signal in black on a yellow background is also visible on the outer surface of the second side face 4 but extends vertically along one edge of the face 4.
To advantage, these signals -are formed with predetermined photometric characteristics expressed as the coefficient of specific luminosity R (candela/lux m 2) given by the following table:
ANGLE OF DIVERGENCEK ANGLE OF ILLUMINATION J3 in degrees (3) in degrees (4) 1/3)31 5 30 )32 5 50 5 50 R(cd lux -1 m- 2) 22.0 7.5 15.0 3.0 and can be derived from the following formula:
R' = R/A = I/El x A) where:
I = the luminous intensity of the representative sample under test in the direction of observation (expressed in candelas); E1 = the illumination of the surface of the sample measured in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the incident light (expressed in lux); A = the area of the sample (expressed in m 2); the angle of divergence C(, is the angle between the direction of the light incident on-the sample and the direction of observation, and the angle of illumination) is the angle between the 6 direction of the incident light and the normal to the surface of the sample.
Each interchangeable signalling board 10 is in fact constituted by a rigid, transparent layer of PVC superposed on a refractive film and bears a respective symbol relating to the specific reason for the call for assistance.
In particular, three signalling boards 10a, 10b and 10c are provided and have the following symbols resPectively:
- a red cross relating to a need for an ambulance or medical assistance, a black wrench for mechanical assistance, and - a petrol pump, also in black, for refuelling.
At its opposite upper corners, each board has engagement means comprising respective keyhole-shaped slots 11 which can be engaged by corresponding pegs 16 provided on the side face 4.
Each preselected board 10 is therefore mounted on the side face 4 beside the vertical "SOS" signal by means of the essentially peg-and-slot-type engagement means 16, 11.
It is important to note that the signals on the side f aces 3 and 4, as well as the symbols and the colours of the signalling boards 10, are selected in accordance with the current legal norms prescribed for road traffic control In particular, the trichromatic coordinates of the signals and the boards measured as specified in the CIE 7 (Commission International d'Eclairage) directive are within the zones of the CIE colorimetric chart defined by the points specified in the following table, in which the minimum luminance factors are also indicated:
COORDINATES OF THE FOUR MINIMUM COLOUR POINTS DEFINING THE LUMINANCE PERMITTED ZONE FACTOR! (STANDARD ILLUMINANT D6501 GEOMETRY 45/0) 1 2 3 4 X 0.350 0.300 0.280 0.330 white 0.30 y 0.350 0.300 0.320 0.370 X 0.545 0.487 0.427 0.465 ellow 0.25 y 0.454 0.423 0.483 0.534 In the motor accessory according to the present invention, the distress signals and the symbols on the interchangeable boards are thus clearly legible, even from a distance, and indicate immediately and effectively the specific reason for the call for assistance.
This -motor accessory has been found to be quick and easy to use and can also be produced commercially in large quantities quite cheaply.
8 A further advantacje provided by the accessory of the invention is that, when it is folded in its inoperative condition, it is very compact to the extent that it can be housed in a protective envelope 15 of synthetic plastics materi.al or paper, as shown in Figure 4.
