Abstract
A security lock for a closure member as shown, a door 1 having a surrounding frame 2 comprises a front plate 3 shaped and dimensioned to overlap a front lateral edge region of the closure member 1 and an adjacent portion of the frame 2, a threaded clamping rod 5 journalled in front plate 3 and extending rearwardly therefrom so as to penetrate the closure member 1 in said edge region and a clamping member 4 for screw threaded engagement with the rearward portion of rod 5 and turning means at the front end of rod 5, for turning the rod so as to clamp the closure member 1 between the plate 3 and the clamping member 4 with the plate 3 overlapping the frame. As shown, the turning means comprises a locking head 7 rotatable within a sleeve 8 welded to plate 3 which head 7 is engageable with a key 9, the head 7 and key 9 having interengaging recesses and pins. <IMAGE>
Description
A SECURITY LOCK
This invention relates to a security lock for a closure member particularly but not exclusively a door.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple and reliable security lock which can replace or supplement a traditional lock.
According to the present invention there is provided a security lock for a closure member having a surrounding frame, comprising a front locking plate shaped and dimensioned to overlap a front lateral edge region of the closure member and an adjacent portion of the frame, a threaded clamping bar journalled in said front plate and extending rearwardly therefrom so as to penetrate the closure member in said edge region in use, a clamping member for screw threaded engagement with the rearward portion of said rod, and (preferably vandal-proof) turning means at the front end of said rod for turning the rod so as to clamp the closure member between the plate ahd the clamping member in use with the plate overlapping the frame.
The invention will now be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a door fitted with a security lock in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a detail of Fig. 1.
A door 1 has a frame with a side member 2 at the opening side thereof. Prior to fitting of the security lock of the invention the door 1 is provided with a conventional lock or other fitting requiring the provision of a through hole in the edge of the door. Such fitting may be removed in order to permit attachment of the security lock of the invention.
Alternatively, a fresh hole may be provided for receiving the security lock.
The security lock comprises a front plate 3, a rear clamping member 4, and an interconnecting threaded rod 5 in screw-threaded engagement with the clamping member 4. The front end of the rod 5 is unthreaded and journalled in the front plate 3 between a rear disc 6 welded to the rod 5 and a front locking head 7 rotatable within a cylindrical sleeve 8 welded to the front plate 3 and projecting forwardly beyond the locking head 7 so as to prevent unauthorised access thereto.
The locking head 7 is engageable by a key 9 with a barrel end 10 which fits into the well defined by the projecting forward end of the sleeve 8. The adjacent end faces of the barrel end 10 of the key 9 and the locking head 7 are provided with interengaging recesses (on the locking head 7) and pins (on the barrel end 10) arranged in an irregular manner. A tommy bar 13 is provided for turning the key 9.
The front plate 3 has an offset flange 14 which overlaps the frame 2 in use.
In order to fit the locking device to the door 1 the clamping member 4 is removed from the threaded rod 5 which is then inserted from the front through the hole provided as described above. The clamping member 4 is then screwed onto the rod 5 from the rear of the door and final tightening is accomplished by means of the key 9. In the fully clamped condition the flange 14 overlaps frame side member 2 to lock the door securely in position. The key 9 is of course removed after final tightening.
It will be appreciated that the construction is robust with the components preferably being made of steel.
Claims (5)
1. A security lock for a closure member having a surrounding frame, comprising a front locking plate shaped and dimensioned to overlap a front lateral edge region of the closure member and an adjacent portion of the frame, a threaded clamping bar journalled in said front plate and extending rearwardly therefrom so as to penetrate the closure member in said edge region in use, a clamping member for screw threaded engagement with the rearward portion of said rod and turning means at the front end of said rod for turning the rod so as to clamp the closure member between the plate and the clamping member in use with the plate overlapping the frame.
2. A lock as claimed in claim 1, wherein the turning means comprises a locking head engageable by a key, the head and the key having interengaging male and female formations.
3. A lock as claimed in claim 2, wherein the locking head is sunk within a protective socket in which the key is locatable.
4. A lock as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein the male and female formations are pins on the key and recesses on the head, both pins and recesses being arranged in the same irregular pattern.
5. A security lock for a closure member, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
