Abstract

A card or form, e.g. a cheque form, bearing coded information of a bank, credit or other financial account also bears a visual representation of the account holder or authorised user, the representation having been incorporated in or on the card or form as part of the said coded information. Preferably, the representation is digitised and the card or form printed by a computer-driven laser printer. The representation may occupy the major proportion of the surface of the document, and be in a fugitive ink.

Description

IMPROVED CHEOUE AND CARD SECURITY This invention relates to an improvement in the security of bank cheque cards credit cards etc and also cheques and the like, to reduce the possibility of fraud.
There is a widely recognised problem in the banking, building society and credit card industries of fraud through improper use of cards and cheques. The conventional system with cards provides for the signature of the authorised user, which signature has to be compared by the bank clerk or shop assistant with the signature of the customer. This system is very inefficient, and losses totalling many millions of pounds sterling are suffered by the industry annually.
Incorporation of a photograph of the user into cheque cards and the like has been proposed, but encapsulation techniques are expensive and cumbersome, making the service prohibitive. There thus remains an need to improve the security of cheques and cheque cards and the like which is cheap and easy to run.
According to the present invention, we propose that pictorial information of the user, e.g. a photograph, is analysed and incorporated into the coded information already being provided for the card or cheque and that an image is printed thereon with the other coded information. Thus, according to the present invention there is provided a card or form bearing coded information of a bank, credit or other financial account; characterised in that it also bears a visual representation of the account holder or authorised user, the representation having been incorporated in or on the card or form as part of the said coded information.
Preferably, the visual representation is submitted as a photograph which is scanned and digitised by conventional equipment known for the purpose, and the digitised information is incorporated in a coded program used in the preparation of the card or form such that the card or form? vs printed (or otherwise provided) with a visual representation of the person concerned. As the visual representaton is merely part of the printing applied to the card or form, no cumbersome methods of photo encapsulation are required. A preferred method would involve the use of a computer-driven laser printer.
Preferably, the visual representation takes up a major proportion of the surface of the card or form and, ideally, appears on both sides. Where the form is a cheque form, it is particularly preferred that the normal background printed in fugitive ink itself comprises the visual representation. Again, the image printed in fugitive ink should preferably be on both sides of the paper.
Apart from the above mentioned advantages of increased financial security, a card according to the present invention also has uses as a means of identification in other situations, for example in football grounds and in public houses and off licences

Claims (5)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A card or form bearing coded information of a bank, credit or other financial account characterised in that it also bears a visual representation of the account holder or authorised user, the representation having been incorporated in or on the card or form as part of the said coded information.
  2. 2. A card or form according to claim 1, in which the visual representation is coded as digitised information in a program which is used to prepare the card or form.
  3. 3. A card or form according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the representation occupies a major proportion of the surface of at least one side.
  4. 4. A form according to any of claim 1 to 3, comprising a cheque form with the representation printed in fugitive ink as the background to be written on.
  5. 5. A card or form substantially as described herein.
