Abstract
A folding, freestanding screen, eg a shower screen, has a membrane 3 which is collapsable against an adjacent wall or other surface. Untying a cord 8 from a bracket 12 causes the screen to open outwards and downwards by gravity; pulling the same cord 8 and tying at the bracket 12 causes the screen to retract against the wall. <IMAGE>
Description
FOLDING, FREESTAIBING SCREEN
This invention relates to a folding, freestanding screen.
Folding screens are well known articles in the domestic environment in the form of curtains, blinds and shower screens, for example.
All such folding screens, however, generally require structural support of some kind in order to function, for instance an overhead rail.
According to the present invention there is provided a collapsable screen which, when erected, is self-supporting without the aid of any separate structure.
A specific err;bodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective the erected screen in the application of a shower screen adjacent to a domestic bath.
Figure 2 shows in exploded perspective the individual elements of the screen.
Figure 3 shows front and side elevations of the screen when not in use.
Figure 4 shows front and side elevations of the screen when erected for use.
Preferring to the drawings the screen comprises an assertly of rigid profiles 1 mounted on a connecting pin 2 which is covered with a light - weight water proof membrane 3. Two mounting brackets 4 and 5, which are attached to the adjacent wall using standard fixings 6 and 7, accept the location of the screen assembly 1, 2 and 3
A chord 8 is fixed at point 9 and is introduced through a series of holes 10 around the perimeter of the screen 3 and finally over a pulley wheel 11.
The action upon point 9 of pulling or releasing the chord 8, through the holes 10 and over the pulley 11, causes the screen 1 and 3 to be raised.
(folded away) or lowered (erected for use) respectively.
Upright stowage of the screen is secured by the pulling and tying of the chord 8 around a bracket 12.
When the screen 1 and 3 is lowered a flap falls down 13 to provide a seal against the bath.
Although the specific embodiment of the invention is descibed here as a shower screen, it will be aptreciated that other applications are possible.
Claims (4)
1 A folding, freestanding screen comprising a collapsable, pleated membrane, means for fixing to an adjacent surface and means for erection and stowage respectively against this surface.
2 A folding, freestanding screen as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the collapsable membrane consists of an assembly of rigid profiles mounted on a connecting pin, which is covered with a light-weight ikin.-.
3 A folding, freestanding screen as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the raising and lowering of the screen is effected by pulling and releasing respectively a chord, fixed at one end, through a series of holes in the membrane and over a pulley.
4 A folding, freestanding screen substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 4 of the accompanying drawings.
