Abstract
A rest for a fishing rod comprises a bank or base stick (2) for supporting the rest on the ground (14), a beam element (6) pivotally connected to the upper end of the bank or base stick (2), means for mounting a front end support (8) at an end of the beam element (6) spaced from the pivot (4) and means for mounting a back end support (12) adjacent to the pivot (4). The beam and stick may be telescopic. <IMAGE>

This invention reiates to a rest tor a fishing rod.
In many types of angling, in particular in competition angling, it is necessary for the angler to be abie to rest his rod for periods of time while awaiting a bite.
For this purpose it is necessary to support the rod at both ends in order to achieve an optimum angie of the rod for particular angling conditions.
Üsally this is carried out by means of individual front end and back end supports wnlcn require separate mounting, usually with tne use Of ground spikes. This can $provide significant difficulties where angling concitlons are suc that tne ground Is not suitable for this purpose. These conditions can occur on steeply sioping banks or where the water is eager with stones, rocks or even concrete. Pnus the problem is to put in a front end support close to the water. Alternatively, it is possible that a front end support can be easily placed but a corresponding placement of a back end support is difficult or even impossible.Forthermore, with these types of support it is often impossible to obtain just the right angle of the ro.
The invention sees to provide a rest for a fishing rod in which some or all of the above difficulties are obviated or substantially reduced.
According to the invention, a rest for a fishing rod comprises a bank or base stick for supporting the rest on the ground, a beam element pivotally connected to the upper end or the bank or base stick, means for mounting a front end support at an end of the beam element spaced from the pivot and means for mounting a bac end support' adjacent to the pivot.
Preferably the pivot for the beam element 15 located at the end of the beam element away from the means for mounting the front end support.
The beam element and/or the bank stick may be telescopic to provide distance adjustment between the front end support and the back end support and/or height adjustment for the rest as a whole. The bank stick may be provided with a pointed end ior digging Into the ground.
The back end support may be located on the pivot itself.
The invention will now be desoribed in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure i is a diagrammatic siGe view of one embodiment of a rest for G f fi ishing rod in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective and more detailed view of the rest shown in figure í; Figure 3 is an exploded view of the pivot joint of the rest shown in figure 2, and
Figure 4 is perspective view of the lower end of the bank stick with an optional attachment designed to prevent excessive sining of the stand into so surfaces and to prevent rotation of the stand.
referring to figure i of the drawings, a rest for a fishing rod comprises, in general a bank stick 2, a pivot joint 4 carrying a Deam element 8, At tne far ena of the beam element 6 is a front end support 8. The pivot joint 4 itself carrles a back end support carrier iO on which a back end support 12 is located.
In use, the bank stick 2 is pushed into the ground 14 and the rod, indicated by chain lines Ib, is laid on the rest as shown and its angle is adjusted by movement of the pivot joint 4.
Figures 2 and 3 snow the rest in greater detail.
Referring particulariy to figure 2, tne bans stick 2 is pointed at one end LO for insert ion into the ground. It is telescopic and to this end comprises an outer tube 22 and an inner tube 24. The upper end of the outer tube 22 is slit and is surrounoec at this point by a collar 28 in whion is located a thumo screw 28, used to tighten tne Silt end of the outer tube 22 on the inner tube 24 and thus maintain a desired length of the bank stick 2 and the height of tne rest from the ground.
The top enG of the inner tube 24 is internally threaded, for example by insertion of a threaded Dush and receives a threaded spigot 3CJ from the pivot joint 4 as can be best seen from figure 3.
The pivot joint 4 (see particularly figure 3) comprises a main body 32 having a cylindrical bore 34 therethrough. This bore 34 has a slit 36 along one side for a purpose to be described. A spigot 38, threaded at 40, protrudes from one side of the main body 32 and carries the beam element 6.
The slis 36 of the bore 34 has a transverse bore 42 extending from the left hand side of tne main body 32 (as seen from figure 8) into the opposite side of the slit 38 and the right nend end of this tore 42 is threaoed to receive a thumb screw 44. The main Dody 32 is also provided with a generally tangential bore 33 in which is inserted, by means of an interference fit, threading or glueing, the support carrier 10. This support carrier 10 receives the back end support 12, which, as can be seen from figure 2, is a "V" shaped element, and may be threaded at 35 for this purpose.

The part 48 is retained In the bore 34 by means of a retainer disc 52 which is large than the bore 34 and is screwei onto the end of the cylindrical part 4d by mean.s of a screw 54. Tightening of the thumb screw 44 will lock tne rotary part 46 in the main body 32 and prevent relative rotation between the two parts.
As previously stated, the spigot 38 carrles the beam element S. To this ena, the beam element S is threaded internally, for example, by means of an inserted bushing (not shown) to engage the thread 40 on the spigot 38.
The construction of the beam element 6 is similar to the construction of the bank stick 2. It comprises an inner tube 60 which slides in an outer tube 62 secured to the spigot 38. The outer end of the outer tube 62 is slit and is surrounded at this point by a collar 64 in which is located a thumb screw 66, used to tighten the slit end of the outer tube 62 on the inner tube 60 and thus maintain a desired length of the beam element 6.
The outer end of the inner tube 60 is suitably threaded to take a front end support 8. While this front end support may be of any suitable type, the one depicted in the orswings comprises a five digit arrangement 70 joined together at a stem 72. This stem 72 Is provided with a pivot joint 74 before its sttatnment to tne inner tube 60 of the beam element 6.
Figure 4 shows an optional attachment 80 which may be fitted to the lower part of the bank stick 2. This attachment has been designed for two purposes. Firstly it is intended to prevent the stand from sinking too far into the ground where the ground is very soft and secondly, it is intended to prevent the stand from rotating out of position, particuîarly under the action of current on the fishing line or when a fish bite.
To this end, the attachment 80 comprises a cross member 82 having an eniarged centre portion 84. Tnls centre portion 54 has a central aperture 86 through wnlcn the bank stick 2 passes, a threaded bore being provided at right angies to the aperture 86 to receive a bolt, the knurlen heed of which can De seen at 88. When this bolt sorewed in tigntly. the end of the bolt will engage the surface of tne bank: stick 2 so that tne attachment is locked in place.
Depending from the two ends of the cross member 82 are two triangular blades 90 and 92. when the bank stick is inserted into the ground, the blades 90 and 92 will aiso dig into the ground. They will resist a torque being applied to the stand and thus prevent it from rotating.
Furthermore, the cross member 82, if it engages the surface of the ground, wiii act as a stop and prevent the bank stick 2 from being pushed further into the ground.
In use, the attachment 8O may be assembled onto the bank stick 2 and tightened up thereon prior to pushing the bank stick into the grounc. If, on the other hand, tne attachment is left ioose, tne bank stIck can first be positioned In the ground at the right helgnt and angle.
Once the bank stick is in position, the attachment can be pushed down into the ground and the bolt thightened to hold it in piace.
it will be appreciated that various modifications may be made to the above described embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, an additional pivot joint may be provided towards the free end of the beam element 6. This may DC used instead of or as well as the pivot joint 74 of the front end support 8 and provides extra adjustment for rod positioning. This is of significance where it is desired to use tne rest in reverse operation with the supports 12 and 8 exchanged.
The spigots 52 and 38 of the pivot joint may be moulded on to the parts concerned. Alternatively, the spigots could oe formed from suitably threaded lengths of rod stock which are Tixed into bores in the pivot joint by screwing, glueing or using an interference fit. The bank stick could be replaced by standard forms of bank stick which are commercially available. Both the oack end and front end supports could be replaced by standard commerciaily available units if required.
The pointed end of the bank stick may be attached to the outer tube 22 so as to be removable. In this way the bank stick 2 and beam 6 can be effectively interchangeable. Since the inner tubes 24 and 60 of the two members 2 and 6 respectively must remaIn where they are, it is possible to obtain a much longer bank stick while still permitting a reasonable adjustment of the beam.
Where an attachment is provided. tnis mav if desired have only a singie depending blade, The blades could be of a different shape, in the form, for example, of an equilateral triangle or with the slant side to the outside of the attachment instead of to the inside.
Claims (13)
1. A rest for a fishing rod comprising a bank or base stick for supporting the rest on the ground, a beam element pivotally connected to the upper end of the bank or base stick, means for mounting a front end support at an end of the beam element spaced from the pivot and means for mounting a back end support adjacent to the pivot.
2. A rest as claimed in claim i, wherein the pivot for tne beam element is located at the end of tne beam element away from the mean.s for mounting the front end support.
3. A rest as claimed in claim i or 2, wherein the beam element is r,elescopic to provide distance adjustment between the front end support and the back end support.
4. A rest as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the bank stick is telescopic to provide height adjustment for the rest as a whole.
5. A rest as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the bank stick is provided with a pointed end for digging into the ground.
6. A rest as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the back end support is located on the pivot itself.
7. A rest as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the front end support is arranged to provide a number of rod support positions transversely of the beam.
A rest as claimed in claim 7, wherein the front end support has a forK like structure. tne support positions being locsated between the tines of the fork.
9. A rest as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein an anti twist and/or insert ion limiting attachment is provided adjustably on the bank stick.
10. A rest as claimed in claim 7, wherein the attachment comprises a cross member having an aperture through which tne bank stick can pass and means for releasably securing tne cross member at any suitable location along the length of the bank stick.
il. A rest as claimed in claim r wherein the cross member carries one or more depending pointed blades spaced from the bank stick for insertion in the ground.
12 A rest as cialmed in claim 8 or 9, wherein the cross member has a threaded bore extending into the aperture and ar, right angles thereto. tne bore carrying a headed bolt for engagement with tne bank stick to secure the cross member thereto.
13. A rest for a fishing rod substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
