Abstract
In an electric motor, brushgear comprises a brushleaf 2 attached to a terminal 6. The leaf 3 and a projecting connector portion 10 of the terminal 6 extend in a common plane P-P transverse to the motor axis. A mounting portion 11 on the terminal 6 extends perpendicular to the axis P-P and is fitted in a slot 16 in an end wall 17 of the motor end cap 13 and swaged or crimped to form retaining ears 19. A lug 8 on the leaf 2 engages a slot 9 in the terminal 6 to prevent relative angular movement. <IMAGE>
Description
BRUSHGEAR FOR AN ELECTRIC MOTOR
The present invention relates to brushgear for an electric motor.
The invention provides an electric motor, having brushgear comprising a brush arm mounted in a holder, the brush arm comprising a terminal and a brush leaf, the brushleaf being attached to the terminal and making electrical contact therewith, wherein the terminal has a connector portion which extends outside of the motor for connection to a power supply, the connector portion and brushleaf extending in generally the same plane, and a mounting portion which extends transverse to the said plane for attachment of the brush arm to the holder.
Preferable the holder is an end cap of the motor.
Preferably the mounting portion extends through a slot in the end cap to present an exposed surface on the outside of the end cap. The mounting portion may be swaged or crimped at its outer end to fix it on the end cap.
The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows schematically brushgear mounted on an end cap of an electric motor of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, a brusharm 1 comprises a brushleaf 2 carrying a brush proper 3 at one end 4 and mounted at its opposite end 5 on a terminal 6 by an upset rivet 7. A finger 8 on the end 5 extends through an aperture 9 in the terminal 6 to locate the leaf 2 against rotation about the terminal 6. The terminal 6 has a connector portion 10 and a mounting portion 11.
The leaf 2 and connector portion are generally elongate and their longitudinal axes lie in a common or parallel planes P-P transverse to the motor axis.
The mounting portion 11 extends transverse to the plane P-P and has two shoulders 12.
The terminal 6 can be of, for example, copper or brass and the leaf 2 of phosphor bronze or beryllium bronze. Each part 6, 2 is stamped and, if necessary, folded from strip or sheet material.
The brush arm 1 is mounted in a plastics end cap 13 of a fractional horsepower PMDC motor. The connector portion 10 is received in a slot 14 in a sidewall 15 of the end cap, the slot 14 being open at its lower end. The mounting portion 11 is a tight fit in a slot 16 in an end wall 17 of the end cap 13 and its end 18 is swaged or crimped over to form ears 19 which bear on the material of the end wall 17 to mount the mounting portion 11 in the end wall 17, the shoulders 12 abutting the inner surface of the end wall. To prevent movement out of the plane of the mounting portion 11, the overlapping parts of the leaf 2 and terminal 6 are sandwiched between posts 20, 21 depending from the end wall 17.
In use the end cap 13 is mounted on a casing of the
PMDC motor, the leaf 2 urging the brush 3 against a commutator of the motor.
Generally two brush arms will be mounted in the end cap 13.
Various modifications may be made to the described embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention.
Claims (5)
1. An electric motor having brushgear comprising a brush arm mounted in a holder, the brush arm comprising a terminal and a brush leaf, the brushleaf being attached to the terminal and making electrical contact therewith, wherein the terminal has a connector portion which extends outside of the motor for connection to a power supply, the connector portion and brushleaf extending in generally the same plane, and a mounting portion which extends transverse to the said plane for attachment of the brush arm to the holder.
2. An electric motor as claimed in claim 1, wherein the connector portion extends sideways of the motor and the mounting portion extends axially of the motor.
3. An electric motor as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the holder is an end cap of the motor.
4. An electric motor as claimed in claim 3, wherein the mounting portion extends through a slot in the end cap and is exposed on the outside thereof.
5. An electric motor substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
