Abstract
A laminated panel comprises a non-combustible base panel 6 to which is bonded a decorative layer assembly which includes a plastics outer layer 2 and a metallised film 3 between the plastics outer layer and the base panel. In a preferred embodiment, the decorative layer assembly also includes a PVC sheet material 1 to one face of which the metallised film is bonded, the other face of which is bonded to the non-combustible base panel 6. <IMAGE>
Description
PANELS
The present invention relates to panels intended particularly but not exclusively in forming wall linings for rooms or for forming suspended ceilings.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a laminated panel comprising a noncombustible base panel to which is bonded a decorative layer assembly which includes a plastics outer layer and a metalLised film between the plastics outer layer and the base panel.
Preferably the decorative layer assembly provides an embossed, holographic, reflective or diffractive finish for the laminated panel.
By providing the metallised film between the plastics outer layer and the non-combustible base panel, the final laminated panel is provided with fire resistant properties. Laminated boards in accordance with the invention have passed BS 476 part 6 (fire propagation) and part 7 (surface spread of flame) to
Class 0.
Preferably, the decorative layer assembly is prepared from a plastics sheet material (eg. rigid or semi-rigid PVC, eg. with a thickness of 0.1 - 0.30mm) and a plastics film which is provided with a metallised surface. The plastics film (eg. a polyester) is bonded to the plastics sheet material so that the metallised layer is sandwiched therebetween.
Prior to bonding the decorative layer assembly to the base panel, a surface effect may be provided on that face of the assembly which will form the outer face of the laminated panel. For example, the decorative layer assembly may be provided with an embossed finish. Alternatively or additionally, lines may be cut in the outer face of the decorative layer assembly to provide a mosaic appearance.
The base panel to which the decorative layer assembly is bonded should be one which has been manufactured to close tolerances so as to minimise surface roughness which would adversely effect the appearance of the decorative layer.
Preferably, the base panel (which may for example have a thickness of 3 to 10 mm) is comprised of cement fibre which may have three varying densities and properties to suit particular environmental conditions. Alternatively, the base board may comprise rock wool bonded and compressed together.
The bonding of the decorative layer assembly to the base panel is preferably effected by a non flammable.solvent based moisture curing polyurethane adhesive which avoids fire problems.
The laminated panels may be produced by a process which comprises removal of dust from the base panel (or at least from that face thereof to which the foil will be bonded), applying an adhesive (for example a solvent based single part sprayable moisture curable polyurethane (eg. Ax7153 ASTROLOK adhesive)) to the panel, bonding the decorative layer assembly to the panel, and, if necessary, trimming the decorative layer assembly to the panel size. The dust removal may for example be effected by passing the base panel through a vacuum curtain or by using a rotating brush associated with vacuum means for dust removal.
Application of the adhesive to the base panel may be by roller coating or by spraying.
The invention will be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 schematically illustrates the preparation of a decorative layer assembly; and
Fig. 2 schematically illustrates one embodiment of panel in accordance with the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, a decorative layer assembly is produced from a semi rigid PVC sheet 1 (e.g. 0.15mum thickness), and a polyester film 2 (e.g. 12 microns thickness) having a metallised coating 3 (e.g.
aluminium) deposited on one face thereof. The PVC sheet 1 is bonded (eg. by an electrostatic bonding technique or similar) to the polyester film 2 such that the metallised coating 3 is adjacent the sheet 1.
After this bonding operation, the decorative layer assembly may be embossed, e.g. by way of an embossing roller 4, to provide a surface pattern thereon.
In a modified decorative layer assembly, a rigid
PVC sheet (e.g. 0.25mm thickness) may be used (instead of the semi-rigid sheet) and has bonded thereto a reflective polyester film having a metallised surface which is juxtaposed to the PVC sheet. If desired, mosaic lines may be cut or stamped into the polyester film, as schematically illustrated by the knife 5.
To produce the panel of the invention, the decorative layer assembly is bonded to a noncombustible base panel 6 (see Fig. 2), e.g. a cement fibre board. The base panel 6 is initially de-dusted by a suitable means and the adhesive (e.g. Ax7153
ASTROLOK adhesive) is applied to a face thereof. The decorative layer assembly is then positioned on the base panel 6 with the PVC sheet 1 in contact with the adhesive. The complete assembly may then be passed through a nip or the like to ensure secure adhesion between the decorative layer assembly and the base panel 6. If necessary, any excess of decorative layer assembly around the base panel may be trimmed.
Panels as described with reference to Fig. 2 have passed BS 476 part 6 (fire propagation) and part 7 (surface spread of flame) to class 0.
The illustrated panels may be used as partitions for rooms, wall linings, or for suspended ceilings.
