Abstract

An access junction assembly 1 for a drainage and/or sewer inspection chamber comprises a base section 2, a riser section 3 and a D-shaped seal 4 carried by the riser section 3. The base section 3 includes a sidewall 6 having side inlets 7, 9, 10 and a common outlet 8. The riser section 2 comprises a top frame portion 26 for receiving an access cover and a riser sidewall 25 extending from the frame portion 26 for insertion into the socket defined by the base section sidewall 6. The position of the riser may be readily adjusted to achieve a desired position for the frame portion 26. <IMAGE>

Description

ACCESS JUNCTIONS The invention relates to access junctions particularly for use in drainage and sewer applications.
According to the invention there is provided an access junction comprising a base section, a riser section and sealing means interposed therebetween, the base section comprising a floor portion and a base section sidewall extending from the floor portion, the sidewall having at least one side inlet, at least one side outlet and defining a socket having a top access opening, the riser section comprising a top frame portion for receiving an access cover and a riser sidewall extending from the frame portion for insertion into the socket with the sealing means interposed therebetween for adjustment of the riser section relative to the base section for positioning the top frame portion in use.
In one embodiment of the invention the sealing means comprises a ring seal extending around the riser section or base section sidewall.
Preferably, the seal is of generally D-shape in transverse cross-section.
Preferably, the seal extends around the outer surface of the sidewall portion of the riser section, the flat surface of the seal engaging against the riser sidewall portion and the curved surface of the seal engaging against the inner surface of the sidewall portion of the base section.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the seal is housed between a pair of spaced-apart ledges on the riser section sidewall portion.
In one embodiment of the invention the access junction includes a riser extension for interposing between the riser section and the base section or for insertion into the riser.
Typically, the base portion inlet and outlet are provided by sockets for sealing and coupling engagement with pipes.
Preferably, the base includes an inlet and outlet which are arranged substantially on the same longitudinal axis.
Preferably the inlet and outlet include an enlarged diameter portion to accommodate small variations in the angle at which a pipe is entered into the inlet or outlet.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective exploded view of an access junction according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic plan view of the access junction of Fig. 1 in an assembled configuration, Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic cross-sectional side view in the direction of the arrows III-III of Fig. 2 showing a riser forming part of the access junction in different positions, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional side view of portion of the access junction.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated an access junction according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The access junction 1 comprises a base section 2 and a riser section 3 which is adjustably mounted to the base section 2. A seal 4 is provided between the base section 2 and riser section 3.
The base section 2 comprises a floor portion 5 and a base section sidewall 6 extending upwardly from the floor portion 5. The base section sidewall 6 in this case has a straightthrough inlet 7 and outlet 8 which have a common central longitudinal axis. Two side inlets 9, 10 are also provided for connection to pipes which extend, in this case, at angles of 450 and 900 respectively to the straight-through pipe run. It will be noted that the floor portion 5 is configured and shaped adjacent the inlets 7, 9, 10 to direct fluid flow to the outlet 8.
Each of the inlets 7, 9 and 10 and outlet 8 are provided with socket connections 12 having seals 13 which extend to engage the sidewall of a pipe inserted into the socket 12. In the case of the side inlets 9, 10 it will be noted that the diameter of each inlet downstream of the seal 13 is enlarged at 15 to accommodate small variations in the angle at which a pipe is entered to the sockets 12. The inlet 7 and outlet 8 may also have enlarged portions. This allows the access junction 1 to take up variations in the angle of the inlet pipes.
The riser section 3 comprises a top frame portion 26 for receiving an access cover, not shown and a riser sidewall portion 25 extending from the frame portion for insertion into the socket defined by the base section sidewall 6 with the seal 4 interposed therebetween.
In this case the seal 4 comprises a ring seal confined in a groove defined between a pair of spaced-apart sidewardly projecting ledges 31, 32 extending from the outside surface of the riser sidewall portion 25. The seal 4 is D-shaped in transverse cross-section the flat surface of the seal 4 engaging the riser sidewall and the curved surface of the seal 4 engaging against the inner surface of the base section sidewall 6. In this way, twisting of the seal is prevented.
The seal 4 allows the riser section 3 to be manipulated within the base section 2 to achieve a desired position of the top frame portion 26. Thus, the position of the riser section 3 may be adjusted to take account of the inclination of the ground in which the access junction 1 is mounted and/or rotated to allow the frame portion 26 of the riser section 3 to be positioned to follow the line of an adjacent building.
Further, the vertical position of the riser 3 relative to the base 2 can be easily adjusted.
If necessary, an additional riser standard pipe may be interposed between the base section 2 and riser section 3 or between the riser section 3 and an additional cover frame as desired.
