Abstract
A rotatable flanged guide roller (1) for magnetic tapes is provided with a roller surface (2) grooved (3, 3') near the inner side of the flanges (4, 4') so that decollating deposits can lodge without damaging the tape, and as a visible signal of rotation several markings (5) are situated on the outer surface of a flange, and viewed through a recess (7) in shim (6). <IMAGE>
Description
Guide Roller
The invention relates to a guide roller, and particularly to a guide roller for film strips.
It is known from a number of publications that tape recording media, for example magnetic tapes, are cut into narrow strips on decollators and then wound and/or are made into cassettes in loaders or winders.
Decollators, loaders and winders of this type comprise a number of rollers provided with lateral flanges to guide the strips. These rollers can be made from plastics material ov from metal. When the magnetic tape strips are fed to these guide rollers the following problems may arise:
When the magnetic tape is decollated into strips, waste can occur at the edges (fibres, dust etc.) which damages the surface of the magnetic tape when it is deposited on the rollers or adheres to the magnetic tape, and this can give rise to signal distortions, so-called dropout.
When the above-mentioned machines are used for a long time the rotatable guide rollers may become fixed so that the magnetic tape drags or rubs over the surface of the rollers and is thus damaged.
The surfaces of the guide rollers may be damaged when they are used for a long time.
The edges of the magnetic tape strips may be damaged by the flanges.
Another object of the invention was therefore to find improved guide rollers which do not cause the abovementioned problems.
According to the present invention, there is provided a rotatable guide roller for tape film strips which is installed in decollators, loaders, winders and the like, and which is provided with flanges next to the roller surface, wherein the roller surface of the guide roller is grooved on both sides near the inner side of the flanges several concentrically arranged markings are situated on at least one outer surface of the flanges, and wherein a shim is arranged adjacent and parallel to the outer surface of the flanges, and shim having a circular segment recess the length of which is such that the markings can be seen from the outside.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention is described in more detail below (by example only) by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
According to another preferred embodiment of the invention, the width of the roller surface is slightly larger than the width of the strips guided.
According to a further preferred embodiment, the guide roller is made of an alloy of magnesium, aluminium and silicon, and the roller surface is covered with a hard coating approximately 30 um thick.
According to a further preferred embodiment, the hard coating is a protective and multifunctional aluminium oxide layer.
Figure 1 shows a cross-section through a roller of the invention with shim.
Figure 2 shows a plan view of a roller of the invention with shim placed in front of it.
The guide roller (1) sits, for example mounted on a ball bearing on a fixed axis (8) upon which it is rotatably screwed (9). A shim (6) is situated between screw (9) and outer flange (4) of the guide roller. As can be seen from Figure 1, the roller surface (2) of the guide roller, which is flat, has channel-like grooves (3, 3') of approximately 1 mm depth and approximately 1-2 mm width, on both sides near the flanges (4, 4'). The deposits resulting from decollating at the edges of the tape strips can be deposited in these grooves without the magnetic tape being damaged. The roller surface is preferably covered with a hard coating, for example with a layer thickness of 30 um, if the guide roller is made from an aluminium material.
In order to avoid damage of the tape edges, the width of the roller surface between the flanges (4, 4') is slightly larger than the width of the magnetic tape strips so that, for example for a magnetic tape 12.8 mm (1/2") wide 0.5 mm clearance is provided on both sides.
As Figure 2 shows, at least one outer side of the flanges has several concentrically arranged markings (5), for example six holes each offset at 600 to one another, which are coloured black. The shim (6) which has a circular segment recess (7) in accordance with the invention and which is so long that at least one marking can be seen in the recess, is situated between the screw (9) and the outer flange (4). The roller condition of the guide roller according to the invention can thus be very easily controlled externally in the machine which is in use, for example decollator, loader or winder.
