Description
PREPRINTED ARTWORK PRESENTATION FOLDER
This invention relates to a preprinted, preassembled artwork presentation folder for use by artists and graphic designers in presenting artwork, for example, letterheading, advertising matter, logos, trademarks etc. to the printer for the purpose of having the artwork photographed in preparation for the subsequent production of a printing plate embodying that artwork, and the eventual printing of that artwork as a finished product. The artwork folder also provides a means whereby the artist or graphic designer can display his artwork to his customer or client to obtain approval prior to printing.
At present it is customary for artists and graphic designers to construct their own artwork board for the presentation of their artwork.
Usually this board will comprise a stiff backing board or card on which the artist or graphic designer inscribes his own cut marks and his own boundary lines marking the ultimate paper size, for example, A4, A3, foolscap, etc., for the finished printed product. The boundary lines are usually drawn in a coloured ink, for example, pale blue, which is not reproducible photographically, so that those lines will not appear in the photographic reproduction of the artwork, nor on the subsequently produced printing plate. On the other hand, the cut marks will be drawn in a photographically reproducible colour, for example black ink, so as to appear both on the photographic reproduction, and on the eventual printing plate, those cut marks thus appearing on the uncut printed product to provide guidelines for the final guillotining or trimming of the printed product down to the required size.
Usually, such artwork boards will be provided by the artist with some sort of transparent or translucent overlay upon which he can give additional instructions, for example, as to the various colours to be used, to the printer.
Because such boards are produced largely by hand, this adds considerably to the overall printing costs in such items as letterheading, logo designs, advertising and other miscellaneous printed matter. Also because such boards are produced by hand, errors in alignment can and do occur, with the possible consequence of a completely defective printing run.
In accordance with the present invention, these difficulties are overcome by providing the artist or graphic designer with a pre-printed, preassembled artwork presentation folder. Essentially this folder consists of three leaves, i.e. an underlying preprinted artwork board, a translucent or transparent intermediate overlay and a cover sheet bound along one edge so that the two upper leaves can be folded back to expose the underlying artwork board. Preferably, the intermediate overlay sheet and the cover sheet are so bound to the artwork board that they can be folded completely clear of the surface of the artwork board for photographic purposes.
Alternatively, the intermediate overlay and cover sheet can be made readily detachable, for example, by providing each with a line of perforations permitting easy removal of the overlay and cover sheets when no longer required.
Preprinted on the artwork board will be the cut-out marks and the boundary lines, the former in photographically reproducible, e.g. black, ink and the latter preferably in photographically substantially non-reproducible, e.g. blue, ink. As will be apparent, the artwork boards will be preprinted according to a standard range of sizes, e.g. A4, A3, foolscap etc., with the cut-out and boundary lines positioned thereon accordingly.
An artwork presentation folder according to the invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an edge view of the folder; and
Figure 2 is a general perspective view of the folder with the intermediate overlay and cover sheet shown partially broken away to show the printed surface of the artwork board.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the artwork folder consists essentially of an artwork board (1), e.g. of stiff card or other suitable material, preprinted on its upper surface with four L-shaped cut-out marks (2), these being in dark, e.g. black, photographically reproducible ink. In this case, the cut-out marks mark out the four corners of a rectangular sheet of printed material, e.g. of A4 size. But of course different numbers and different positionings of the cut-out marks will apply for other paper sizes and shapes.
Joining the cut-out marks (2) are preprinted boundary lines (3) delineating the final boundaries of the printed sheet, and providing the framework within which the artist or designer has to work. Such preprinted boundary lines are preferably in an ink, e.g. blue, which is not photographically reproducible so as not to appear in the photographic reproduction of the artwork displayed on the artwork board.
Bound to the artwork board (1) along one edge are an intermediate overlay (4) of transparent or translucent sheet material, and an overlying cover sheet (5). In this embodiment the intermediate overlay (4) and cover sheet (5) are shown wrapped around the edge of the artwork board (1) and fastened to the under surface of the board, for example by adhesive. In this way both can be folded back so as to expose the surface of the artwork board completely. Alternatively they can simply be torn away if no longer needed, and for this purpose can, if desired, be provided with a line of perforations along the line of the binding. The method of attaching the intermediate overlay and the cover sheet to the artwork board is, however, in no way critical to this invention, and numerous other methods may be devised, e.g. stitching or stapling.
In addition to the preprinted cut marks and boundary lines on the artwork board (1) any of the three leaves can be provided with other preprinted matter, for example, with the name of the artist or graphic designer, the name of the supplier or the printer, or any other advertising or promotional matter.
As already indicated the purpose of the intermediate overlay is to provide an information sheet upon which the artist or designer can give particular instructions to the printers, for example, as to the colours to be used for particular bits of the artwork which will be visible through the translucent or transparent overlay.
Claims (6)
1. A preprinted, preassembled artwork presentation folder comprising an artwork board preprinted on its surface with a plurality of cut-out marks marking the corners of the printed sheet to be produced from the artwork presented on said board and providing on said printed sheet guide marks for the final guillotining or trimming of the printed sheet, and with a plurality of boundary lines delineating the eventual edges of the printed sheet, said artwork board having bound thereto along one edge a translucent or transparent intermediate overlay sheet immediately overlying the printed surface of the artwork board, and an overlying cover sheet.
2. An artwork presentation folder according to claim 1, wherein the intermediate overlay and cover sheet are bound to the artwork board by a binding which permits the overlay and cover sheet to be folded completely clear of the artwork board thereby to expose completely the surface of the board following the positioning or formation of the artwork thereon.
3. An artwork presentation folder according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the preprinted boundary lines on the artwork board are in a photographically non-reproducible coloured ink.
4. An artwork presentation folder according to claim 3, wherein the cut marks are printed in black photographically reproducible ink, and the boundary lines in blue.
5. An artwork presentation folder according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the preprinted cut marks and boundary lines on the artwork board define the four corners and sides of a rectangle.
6. An artwork presentation folder according to claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
