Abstract
222,137. Synthetic Ammonia &. Nitrates, Ltd., (Assignees of Dely, J. G.). Sept. 19, 1923, [Convention date]. Nitrogen; hydrogen.-The purification of the nitrogen-hydrogen mixture employed in the synthesis of ammonia is effected by a cold process using water ammoniacal copper solution, and alkali solution for scrubbing the compressed gas. Air and steam in regulated quantities are passed through incandescent coke in the gas producer 1 and the gas mixture produced, after being washed in the water scrubber 2, is stored in the gas holder 4. Steam is then added in regulated quantity to the gas mixture to effect the oxidation of the carbon monoxide content in the apparatus 5, and the product compressed to about 1400 lbs. in the compressor f. Prior to compression the gas may be cooled in the refrigerator 5<b>; a gas holder 5<a> is employed to maintain the supply of gas constant in the system. The compressed gas is then washed at ordinary temperature in the water scrubber 6, after which it is treated preferably at 0‹ C. with ammoniacal copper solution in the vessel 7 to remove carbon monoxide in the manner described in Specification 220,651. Thereafter the gas is washed with cold caustic soda solution in the vessel 8. Pre- Jerably the gas is passed prior to the synthesis through liquefied ammonia, in the manner described in Specification 215,789, for purposes of final purification. Specification 120,546 also is referred to.
