Abstract

A machine for spreading butter comprises a receptacle 4 for a butter pat and a manually operable ram 7 in the receptacle for compressing the pat and extruding the butter through a slot 8 in the base 9 of the receptacle. A spreader surface 12 defining and extending from one edge of the slot 8 acts as a doctor blade to spread butter as the receptacle 4 is drawn across a slice of bread. <IMAGE>

Description

TITLE Machines for spreading butter DESCRIPTION The Invention relates to a machine for spreading onto bread butter, or any other animal oil or vegetable oil based product of a similar nature such as, for example, margarine. Such spreads are collectively referred to herein simply as 'butter'.
The buttering of a substantial quantity of bread is a very laborious process. Although machines have been proposed which attempt to automate the process of bread buttering, such machines tend to be unnecessarily complex and uneconomical for anything other than the production on a large scale of, for example, sandwiches, and the buttering of bread at a domestic and small scale catering level continues to be done in the traditional manner with a hand held knife.
The invention provides a machine for spreading butter onto bread, which machine has a receptacle for a butter pat, a manually operable ram in the receptacle for compressing the pat and extruding the butter through a slot in the base of the receptacle, and a spreader surface defining one edge of the slot and aligned with the base of the receptable for spreading the extruded butter over the bread as the receptable is drawn across the surface of the bread.
The machine preferably has a handle which is so positioned on the receptacle as to enable manual pressure to be applied to the ram by the handler.
The slot is preferably arranged in the base so that the axis of the slot is perpendicular to the axis of the handle.
The spreader surface may comprise either a portion of the base of the receptacle or an edge of a vertical wall of the receptacle.
The handle is preferably arranged so that the axis of the handle is midway between the extremities of the slot.
The slot may extend completely across the extent of the base of the receptacle, or only partially across the extent of the base of the receptacle. The width of the slot will in practice depend on the nature of the material to be spread, with a different width of slot being suitable for dairy butter than for, for example. a soft margarine, and to this end the width ofthe slot may be variable.
The Drawings Figure 1 is a vertical cross sectional view of a machine according to the invention along the line A-A of figure 2; Figure 2 is a bottom view of a machine according to the invention; and Figure 3 is a rear view of the machine of figure 2.
With reference to figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, a machine for spreading butter indicated generally at 2 has a receptacle 4, typically 9Smm x 80mm x 60mm, for a butter pat 6, and a ram 7 vertically slidable therein. The ram 7 is removable from the receptacle 4 for the insertion of the butter pat 6. In the base 9 of the receptacle 4 there is a slot 8 through which butter from the receptacle 4 is extruded. The axis of the slot 8 is aligned perpendicularly to the direction of operational travel of the receptacle 4. The receptacle 4 is gripped by means of a handle 10 which extends therefrom. The handle 10 is positioned so that the handler can with their thumb apply pressure to the surface 11 of the ram 7 in the direction X as the base 9 of the receptacle 4 is drawn across the surface of the bread (not shown). The handle 10 is also positioned so that the drawing force of the handler is centred along an axis midway between the extremities of the slot, so as to prevent the receptacle from swerving during operation.
The pressure applied to the ram 7 causes the butter pat 6 to be compressed and the butter to be extruded through the slot onto the surface of the bread. The,surface 12 of the base 9 adjacent the edge of the slot 8 which trails when the machine 2 is in operation acts to spread the extruded butter across the surface of the bread.

CLAIMS:
1. A machine for spreading butter onto bread comprising a receptacle for a butter pat, a manually operable ram in the receptacle for compressing the pat and extruding butter through a slot in the base of the receptacle, and a spreader surface defining one edge of the slot and aligned with the base of the receptacle for spreading the extruded butter over the bread as the receptacle is drawn across the surface of the bread.
2. A machine for spreading butter according to claim 1 further comprising a handle so positioned on the receptacle as to enable manual pressure to be applied to the ram by the handler.
3. A machine for spreading butter according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the axis of the slot in the base is perpendicular to the axis of the handle.
4. A machine for spreading butter according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the slot is remote from both ends of the base of the receptacle and the spreader surface is provided by a portion of the base on the trailing side of the slot.
5. A machine for spreading butter according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the slot is adjacent one end of the base of the receptacle and the spreader surface is provided by an edge of an end wall of the receptacle.
6. A machine for spreading butter according to any preceding claim, wherein the slot width is variable.
7. A machine for spreading butter according to any preceding claim, wherein the axis of the handle is midway between the extremities of the slot.
8. A machine for spreading butter according to any preceding claim wherein the slot extends completely across the extent of the base of the receptacle.
9. A machine for spreading butter according to any of claims 1 to 7 wherein the slot extends partially across the extent of the base of the receptacle.
10. A machine for spreading butter substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
