Abstract
The holder comprises a housing member 10 arrangeable to surround the butt end of the drill bit 15 and a locking member 18 arrangeable to extend from the housing member to engage the drill bit. The locking member 18 is a U-member with two lateral pin arms extending through the socket and engaging a bit shoulder 17 in either bit side. The member 18 snap fits in the holder and is protected by a sleeve 21. <IMAGE>
Description
RETAINING DEVICES
The Invention relates to retaining devices, and particularly to devices for retaining drill bits in drilling apparatus.
In drilling apparatus, and particularly in apparatus for drilling holes into mine roofs or mine faces, the apparatus has a rotatable drive member which has a socket therein to receive the butt end of an elongate drill bit. The socket and butt end are so shaped that once the drill bit is inserted into the drilling apparatus, it will rotate with the drive member.
The socket and butt end may for example have a square or hexagonal cross sect Ion.
In general, the apparatus will be used to drill a hole horizontally, or vertically upwardly, so there is no tendency for the drill bit to fall out of the drilling apparatus. However, in some circumstances, it may be desired to drill downwardly, but until now, complicated and expensive devices have been necessary to clamp the drill bit into the socket.
We have now developed a very simple means of retaining a drill bit in a drilling apparatus.
According to the invent ion, a retaining device for retaining a drill bit in drilling apparatus comprises a housing member arrangeable to surround the butt end of the drill bit and a locking member arrangeable to extend from the housing member to engage the drill bit.
The housing member may comprise the rotatable drive member of the drilling apparatus.
Preferably the retaining device Is for use with a drill bit having a shoulder or other abutment thereon, and the locking member comprises at least one locking pin movable to extend over the abutment and hence lock the drill bit against removal from the housing member.
Preferably two locking pins are provided, to engage one on each side of the drill bit.
Preferably the two locking pins comprise the arms of a U-shaped member.
Preferably holes are provided In the housing member at each side of a socket to receive the drill bit, so that the locking member can be Inserted through one side of the housing member to extend first through that side then across the abutment, and then out through the other side of the housing member.
Preferably the locking member and housing member are shaped so that the locking member can be snap fitted into Its locking position.
By way of example, a specific embodiment of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, In which :
Figure 1 is a cross-sectlonal view through an embodiment of retaining device according to the invention;
Figure 2 Is a side elevation of this embodiment of the invention, looking in the direction of arrow A of
Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the retaining device.
The figures show a drive member 10 for a drilling apparatus (not shown). The drive member 10 has a portion 11 by means of which the drive member can be rotated about an axis 12 when in position In the drilling apparatus.
Internally the drive member has a hexagonal cross-section socket 13 for the receipt of the butt portion 14 of an elongate drill bit 15. The drill bit is also of hexagonal cross-section so when the drill bit Is fitted into the socket as shown in Figure 1, the drill bit will rotate with the drive member 10.
As described so far, the device is conventional.
However, unlike conventional apparatus, drive member 10 is provided with a housing port ion 16 which, when the drill bit is fitted into position, surrounds, and extends above, an annular shoulder 17 provided on the drill bit.
Insertable through the housing portion 16, through holes at each side of the housing portion, which are not visible in the drawings, is a locking member in the form of a U-shaped spring clip 18. As can best be seen from Figure 3, the U-shaped clip 18 has two arms 19 and 20 which extend one on each side of the drill bit.
Each arm is curved inwardly slightly, as can be seen from
Figure 3, and the housing portion 16 is simIlarly shaped so that the clip can be snapped into the locking position as shown in Figure 3. In this position each arm passes through a first hole in one side of the housing portion 16, then extends across one side of the shoulder 17, and then extends out through a further hole In the other side of the housing portion 16.
When the clip 18 Is snapped into the position shown In Figures 1 and 3, the drill bit 15 is very simply, but very effectively retained in position in the drive member 10, even if the drilling apparatus Is turned downwardly, for example, to drill a hole in the floor of a mine working. When however it is desired to remove the drill bit, the clip 18 can almost instantaneously be pulled clear to release the drill bit.
If desired, a collar 21 may be provided on the drive member 10, having an annular flange 22 which protects the clip 18 and prevents its accidental removal.
The collar 21 may for example be screw-threaded onto the drive member 10.
