Abstract
221,583. Bruce, W. M. June 20, 1923. Thermionic relays.-In a two-valve relay for recording relatively feeble current impulses of opposite polarity, such as those available in submarine cable reception, the input energy is utilized to make and break a contact in the combined grid circuits, thereby altering the effective impressed voltage. The. resulting change in plate current operates one or other of two separate recording relays, the action being free from sticking or sparking due to excessive current. The Figure shows the system applied to a submarine cable repeater. Incoming pulses of opposite polarity cause, the vibrating tongue a<1> of a moving-coil device a to close one or other of the contacts a<2>, aa<2>, thereby imposing a positive voltage derived from the plate, battery e upon the normal negative potential of the grid cells g, gg. The. consequent rise in plate current operates one or other of the contacts c, cc. The contacts of the moving-coil device are preferably shunted by condensers 9, 9<a> and resistance 8. 8<a>.
