Milling-cutters; taps.-The teeth of formed cutters such as milling-cutters, hobs, taps &c. are, when completed, relieved in two stages so that only the leading portion of each tooth requires accurate grinding after hardening. In Fig. 1, the rear portion only of a tooth A<2> is first relieved at a steeper angle than normal, and the correct relief is, after hardening, imparted to the, front portion A<4> by means of a grinding-wheel B. In a modification, the whole of the tooth may be first relieved at a steep angle and the normal relief subsequently imparted to the front portion by grinding. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the rear portion A<3> of the tooth may be cut back as shown and the front portion ground correctly after hardening. Other modifications of the process are described. For grinding the sides of the teeth a disc grinding-wheel with a conical surface B<2> may be used or, in a modification, a grinding-wheel with a double conical surface may be arranged so that lateral movement of the wheel brings each surface into operation in turn upon opposed sides of adjacent teeth.
